DEPARTMENT: New York City District Council of Carpenters Training Center

REPORT TO:  Assistant Director of Training

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

Job Description: The Carpenters Training Center is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Mass Timber Framing & Installation Instructor to join our team on a part-time basis. This role provides classroom and hands-on instruction in mass timber construction, including planning, virtual design and construction (VDC), prefabrication, delivery, layout, elevation control, rigging, signaling, hoisting, and installation of structural systems such as Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) and glulam. Training reflects real-world jobsite conditions and includes comparison to concrete and steel structures. The instructor will guide members through the erection of mass timber assemblies including posts, beams, shear walls, decks, and stair systems, while ensuring compliance with New York City Department of Buildings (DOB) regulations, Site Safety Training (SST) requirements, and OSHA standards.


Job Responsibilities:
 

Design and implement instructional programs on framing and drywall installation, including understanding blueprints, layout and industry best practices.

Provide hands-on demonstrations and training in preparation, material selection, installation techniques, and finishing processes.

Assess member progress, provide individualized feedback and support to foster growth and skill development.

Remain current on industry advancements, tools, techniques, and trends related to framing and drywall installation.

Ensure a safe and inclusive learning environment, adhering to all safety and quality standards.

Communicate effectively with members, fostering engagement and motivation in the learning process.
 


Requirements

Qualifications & Experience:
 

Must be a member in Good Standing with The New York City District Council of Carpenters.

High school diploma or equivalent; certifications in installation or a related trade preferred.

At least 10 years of experience in structural carpentry or mass timber construction.

Deep knowledge of mass timber materials, systems (CLT, glulam), tools, rigging practices, and installation techniques.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to motivate and engage a diverse group of learners.

Basic proficiency with PC and tablets, as well as related software for instructional purposes.


Skills & Abilities:
 

Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Ability to analyze reports and data relevant to instructional outcomes.

Detail-oriented, organized, and capable of managing tasks through to completion.

Able to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
