Description
Cranemasters is seeking a hands-on, experienced Assistant Manager to help lead field operations supporting emergency derailment response, specialty lifting, railcar repair, and track maintenance projects.
In this role, you will lead from the front-supporting Supervisors, ensuring safe and efficient project execution, and working directly with customers in high-impact, time-sensitive environments. Key Responsibilities
• Lead and support Supervisors in executing multiple field projects safely, efficiently, and in compliance with DOT/FRA regulations and company standards
• Assign work, monitor progress, and ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, and aligned with customer expectations
• Provide hands-on leadership in the field, including coaching, problem-solving, and responding to emergency service calls as needed
• Conduct regular site visits to ensure safety, quality, and operational efficiency while identifying risks and implementing solutions
• Build and maintain strong relationships with railroad customers, field partners, and regulatory agencies through proactive communication and coordination
• Train, mentor, and develop team members, while supporting hiring, performance evaluations, and ongoing coaching
• Support business operations by assisting with workforce planning, budgeting, and forecasting
• Ensure accurate and timely reporting of payroll, labor hours, equipment usage, and project documentation
• Monitor equipment condition and coordinate maintenance or replacements to ensure operational readiness
• Contribute to business growth through customer engagement, relationship-building, and participation in industry events
Skills/Qualifications
• 5+ years of experience in railroad, heavy equipment, or related field operations
• Strong knowledge of DOT and FRA regulations
• CDL Class A or B preferred
• Proven leadership experience managing teams in field environments
• Experience operating heavy equipment (cranes, trucks, excavators, etc.)
• Ability to read and interpret crane load charts and rigging requirements
• Strong communication skills with the ability to lead, coach, and influence others
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ability to learn operational software systems
• Valid driver's license with a clean driving record
• Ability to pass required safety and certification programs
Physical Requirements
• Frequent overnight travel required
• On-call availability (must be able to report within 1 hour)
• Work in all weather conditions and physically demanding environments
• Extended hours, including weekends and holidays as needed
• Active, hands-on role involving walking, operating in rail environments, and lifting up to 50 lbs.
