Description
The Department of Africana Studies at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) invites applications for the tenure-track Advanced Assistant Professor or tenured Associate Professor of Africana Studies (open specialization), to begin August 2025. We seek an advanced assistant professor or a tenured associate professor with a demonstrated record of excellence in applying interdisciplinary and intersectional approaches to scholarship and teaching related to the field of Africana Studies at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels, and a commitment to and record of advocacy on behalf of the field, and who has leadership potential. Interested scholars should demonstrate a track record of independent research with the potential for external funding. Candidates should also have demonstrated commitment to fostering inclusive excellence. The position is fully located in the Africana Studies Department, with the possibility of teaching courses cross-listed with departments in the Social Sciences. Standard teaching load is 2:3.
Qualifications
Preference will be given to candidates who have the expertise of examining the historic and contemporary Black experience in America and the African Diaspora and are well-versed in critical race studies to provide intellectual and administrative leadership to our interdisciplinary program. Preference is also given to scholars whose scholarship focuses on the exploration of race and social justice from an academic or organizational perspective, community-oriented engagement, health promotion and social interventions, historic and contemporary social justice movements, structural inequality, literary and cultural practices, and/or economic, environmental, and social disparities and impact on vulnerable communities in the United States. A Ph.D. in Africana Studies, the Social Sciences, or a closely related field is required.
