Job description

The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry at Colorado College invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Chemistry & Biochemistry with specialization in Computational Chemistry, to begin August 2027.

The department fosters a supportive and inclusive community of faculty and students who share a passion for chemistry and biochemistry. We aim to provide a nurturing learning environment that stimulates growth and intellectual exploration. As a community, we leverage the chemical sciences to promote scientific inquiry through interdisciplinary, experiential learning and research. The department also supports Colorado Collegeโ€™s commitment to Institutional Equity & Belonging through ongoing review and diversification of our curriculum and use of inclusive pedagogy in the classroom. Support and professional development for new faculty are available through opportunities such as the Mentoring Alliance Program (MAP) and the Crown Center for Teaching.

The primary teaching responsibilities for this position will include General Chemistry (CH107, CH108), and foundational courses and upper-level electives in the faculty memberโ€™s area of expertise. Faculty are also expected to contribute to Colorado Collegeโ€™s General Education Program. Tenure-track faculty are expected to teach six blocks per year, with two blocks for development of courses. In the Chemistry & Biochemistry department, one of the six teaching blocks is dedicated to mentored research. In addition to teaching responsibilities, tenure-track faculty are expected to maintain an active research program, mentor undergraduate research students, and engage in department and college service.

The successful candidate will have expertise in computational chemistry, broadly defined. We seek applicants whose research develops and/or applies computational approaches to address problems in chemistry or biochemistry, or at the interface of either with related disciplines. Preference will be given to candidates whose research interests are complementary to current areas of research expertise within the department. The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching and research in a liberal arts setting, and will be able to teach introductory and advanced chemistry courses, develop and maintain a strong research program that includes undergraduate students, advise students who are interested in chemistry and biochemistry, and contribute to the department and the college through service.

Colorado College is a nationally recognized, residential liberal arts and sciences college enrolling approximately 2,000 students from across the US and around the world. The College, located on a 99-acre campus in Colorado Springs, is distinguished by its immersive learning and pedagogy made possible by the Block Plan, in which professors teach, and students take, one course at a time. Each block is three and a half weeks long, allowing for unique teaching and learning strategies. Professors have a six-block teaching duty in the eight-block year, where one of the six blocks may be assigned to supervising senior and independent projects where the work is spread across the year rather than completed in a conventional block.

Minimum Qualifications

A Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related field is required by the start of employment (applications from ABD candidates who will complete their Ph.D. before August 2027 will be considered).

Preferred Qualifications

Broad teaching experience in chemistry, including computational chemistry. Demonstrated success in teaching using innovative and inclusive methods. Ph.D. and postdoctoral research experience, including mentoring of undergraduate students.
