Job description

We are seeking an experienced and certified Medical Planner to join our healthcare and institutional practice. This role will lead the planning process on healthcare projects from early programming through building occupancy, serve as the primary healthcare design liaison for clients, and ensure projects are delivered in compliance with building codes and healthcare design standards.

The ideal candidate has experience navigating the complexities of occupied healthcare facility renovations, understands clinical operations, and can translate the needs of medical staff and administrators into functional, code-compliant healthcare environments. Working closely with project architects and firm leadership, this individual will play a key role in shaping the firm's healthcare practice.

Key Responsibilities:

Healthcare Planning & Programming

  • Lead facility programming, operational workflow analysis, and space planning for hospitals, outpatient facilities, behavioral health environments, and specialty clinical settings.

  • Develop, review, and coordinate architectural plans, elevations, and medical equipment layouts.

  • Conduct pre-design assessments through site visits, stakeholder interviews, functional adjacency analysis, and benchmarking against FGI Guidelines and industry best practices.

  • Develop and validate project scope and functional programs in collaboration with healthcare leadership and clinical staff.

  • Apply FGI Guidelines, NFPA Life Safety Code, applicable building codes, and state and federal healthcare regulations throughout the planning process.

Project Delivery:

  • Coordinate programming through all design phases, ensuring planning intent is maintained from schematic design through construction documents.

  • Assist with ICRA/ILSM planning and provide infection control guidance for occupied healthcare renovation and phased construction projects.

  • Coordinate with architects, engineers, specialty consultants, and healthcare vendors to align planning with building systems and medical technology.

  • Participate in construction administration activities, including site observations, RFI reviews, and medical equipment commissioning support.

Client & Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for end users, department leaders, and operational stakeholders during programming and planning.

  • Translate complex clinical workflows into practical architectural solutions.

  • Facilitate user group meetings, design workshops, and planning sessions with clinical and administrative teams.

  • Build strong relationships with healthcare leadership, facilities management, and project stakeholders.

Business Development:

  • Support client presentations, proposal development (RFP/RFQ responses), and interview preparation.

  • Develop healthcare project narratives, case studies, and marketing materials.

  • Assist with identifying healthcare market opportunities and strategic growth initiatives.

  • Contribute to internal healthcare planning standards, templates, and best practice documentation.


Required:

  • 5+ years of experience in healthcare architecture, medical planning, or a clinical/operational role with direct exposure to healthcare facility design.

  • EDAC (Evidence-Based Design Accreditation and Certification) credential or actively pursuing certification.
