Job description

Role: Payroll Accountant

Location: Denver, CO (Hybrid, in-office)

Pay rate: $32-36/hr, dependent on experience

Benefits: This role is eligible for health, dental, vision and 401K eligible.

We are seeking a detail-oriented and analytical Payroll Accountant to join our team. This role is responsible for processing high-volume, multi-state payroll, ensuring regulatory compliance, performing reconciliations, and supporting month-end accounting functions. The ideal candidate brings strong Workday experience, a solid accounting foundation, and a high degree of accuracy and confidentiality.

Responsibilities

  • Process and audit weekly and biweekly multi-state payroll cycles for 5,000+ employees accurately and on schedule
  • Maintain and update payroll records including earnings, deductions, and tax withholdings
  • Process field employee tips and manage payroll-related ticket requests and employee inquiries
  • Utilize Workday to manage payroll transactions, reporting, and employee data
  • Create and post approximately 30 payroll journal entries per week in support of month-end close
  • Reconcile payroll-related general ledger accounts and assist with month-end and year-end close processes
  • Perform bank reconciliations on payroll accounts, identifying and resolving discrepancies promptly
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll regulations and tax requirements
  • Investigate and resolve payroll discrepancies, employee inquiries, and system issues
  • Support internal and external payroll audits and assist with audit documentation requests
  • Prepare payroll reports and analytics for management review
  • Partner with HR and Accounting teams to ensure data integrity and drive process improvements

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field
  • 3+ years of payroll experience in a high-volume environment
  • Hands-on experience with Workday Payroll strongly preferred
  • Solid understanding of accounting principles and payroll accounting practices
  • Experience with bank reconciliations and general ledger reconciliation
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel including pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, and data analysis
  • Ability to handle confidential information with integrity and strong attention to detail

Preferred

  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) or equivalent certification
  • Experience with multi-state payroll processing
  • Familiarity with SOX compliance or audit support
