Position Description
The Crane Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of overhead, gantry, or mobile cranes to lift, move, position, and secure structural steel materials and assemblies throughout the steel plant. This position plays a critical role in maintaining production flow while ensuring the safety of personnel, equipment, and materials.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Operate overhead, gantry, jib, or mobile cranes to transport steel materials and assemblies
  • Safely lift, move, position, and place loads according to job requirements and signals
  • Calculate load weights, sizes, and center of gravity to ensure safe lifts
  • Inspect cranes, rigging, and lifting devices before use
  • Follow hand signals, radio instructions, or written communication from riggers and supervisors
  • Maintain proper load control at all times to avoid damage or injury
  • Assist with rigging using slings, chains, hooks, and spreader bars as required
  • Conduct routine equipment checks and report mechanical or safety issues immediately
  • Maintain accurate lift logs and inspection records as required
  • Comply with all OSHA regulations, company safety policies, and PPE requirements

Position Requirements
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED preferred
  • Prior crane operating experience in an industrial or steel plant environment
  • Ability to read load charts and understand lift capacities
  • Knowledge of rigging practices and hand signals
  • Strong attention to safety and situational awareness
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required certifications
Preferred Qualifications
  • NCCCO, NCCER, or equivalent crane operator certification
  • Experience operating overhead cranes in a structural steel fabrication plant
  • Experience working with heavy or oversized loads
  • Forklift or rigging certification
