Job title: SAA-Student Anesthesiologist Assistant

Location: Raleigh, North Carolina - WakeMed Raleigh Hospital

Status: Full-time/Exempt

Department: Clinical

Reports to: Chief CRNA

Job Summary:

The SAA manages all anesthetics in a Care Team Model at WakeMed Raleigh Hospital. WakeMed Raleigh is one of the three full-service hospital locations of WakeMedโ€™s 941-bed hospital system, which comprises a network of facilities throughout the triangle area, including seven emergency departments, a dedicated childrenโ€™s hospital and rehabilitation hospital, more than 90 physician ambulatory offices. WakeMed is Wake countyโ€™s only Level 1 Trauma Center. The SAA will use high patient acuity allowing the new and/or experienced SAA to fully implement their clinical skills and education, and continue to expand within any area of expertise that may be desired. At WakeMed Raleigh, the incumbent SAA provides coverage with casework including cardiac, pediatrics, obstetrics, endocrinology, orthopedics, ENT, plastics, podiatry, and some neurosurgery. 

Duties/Responsibilities:

โ—        Examine patientsโ€™ history for allergies or illnesses that would affect anesthesia.

โ—        Evaluate and prepare patients, provide education about surgeries/procedures and recovery, and discuss possible side effects.

โ—        Liaise with other members of the healthcare team such as MDs, nurses, and other healthcare workers.

โ—        Determine appropriate amount, type, and method of anesthesia administration.

โ—        Perform anesthetics; administer medication to patients for pain relief.

โ—        Supervise and assist other SAAs. 

โ—        Oversee recovery and pain management of patients.

โ—        Inform patients of post-surgical and pain management procedures.

โ—        Assist in patient procedure preparation.

โ—        Provide support to other healthcare teams.

โ—        Advise patients on medication type and dosage.

โ—        Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

โ—        Must be a Certified Anesthesiologist Assistant, or in the process of completing the certification through an accredited CAA program.

โ—        Current or compact RN license in the state of North Carolina, or able to obtain NC licensure.

โ—        BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications required. 

OR โ—        Current AA license through the Medical Board. โ—        BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications required.

Required Skills/Abilities:

โ—        Ability to provide safe pre-and post-anesthetic care using innovative and proven techniques.

โ—        Ability to assess patientsโ€™ medical history and plan anesthesia administration for the best outcome.

โ—        High patient acuity with the ability to provide compassionate care to every patient.

โ—        Ability to work in a team, but also autonomously when needed.

โ—        Strong written and oral skills with the ability to communicate clearly under pressure.

โ—        Proficient with technology including medical equipment and computers.

โ—        Maintain a friendly, collaborative attitude and professional demeanor at all times.

Work Environment/Physical Requirements:

โ—        Must have the ability to stand for longer periods of time and be accustomed to frequent and prolonged movement.

โ—        Involves frequent contact with patients, physicians, leadership, facility, and medical office staff.

โ—        Ability to perform work in a hospital where the environment may be stressful and often disruptive.
