What is middle school robotics?
Middle school First Lego League (FLL) Robotics is a hands-on STEM program where students design, build, and program autonomous LEGO robots to complete themed missions on a competition field. Teams also research and present an innovative solution to a real-world problem related to the season's theme, while learning core values like teamwork, problem-solving, and gracious professionalism. The program fosters creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration, preparing students for success in both technical and non-technical fields. You will be working with a head coach and fellow assistant coach but would be in charge of your own team of 3-6 students.
Relevant Skills Needed: STEM problem-solving skills - Ability to troubleshoot and guide students through mechanical or coding challenges. We try not to give students the answer but to help them think through how to solve the problem.
Patience - Supporting students as they learn through trial and error.
Collaboration - Working closely with the head coach, students, and volunteers.
Communication skills - Explaining concepts clearly and adapting explanations for different learning styles.
Organizational skills - Helping keep materials, parts, and team tasks on track.
Creativity - Encouraging innovative robot designs and project ideas.
Mentoring and encouragement - Building student confidence and celebrating effort as much as results.
Team-building abilities - Promoting cooperation, conflict resolution, and positive group dynamics.
Adaptability - Adjusting plans when missions don't go as expected.
Core Values modeling - Demonstrating and reinforcing FLL's principles of discovery, inclusion, and gracious professionalism.
Time management - Helping students balance robot building, coding, and research project work within practice sessions.
Optional but Recommended: Basic LEGO robotics knowledge or coding skills - Understanding of LEGO SPIKE Prime or EV3 hardware and programming software. Open until filled EOE
