SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision of site administration, assists teaching staff in providing English Learner (EL) students with individual and/or group instruction. Responsibilities include developing and maintaining records and instructional materials. Performs related duties as required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Adapts classroom activities, assignments, and/or materials under the direction of the EL teacher and/or EL Facilitator for the purpose of supporting and reinforcing language needs and building academic language and content knowledge.
  2. Assists students, individually or in small groups with lesson assignments for the purpose of presenting and/or reinforcing learning concepts or pre-teaching to build background knowledge that allows EL students to comprehend or have equitable access to grade-level (Tier I) content.
  3. Monitors current and/or former EL student progress toward language/content objectives and targets for the purpose of providing feedback to students, EL teacher, site facilitator, and/or general education teacher.
  4. Collaborate with instructional staff for the purpose of improving the overall quality of student language outcomes.
  5. Under the direction of the EL teacher/EL Facilitator, helps to instruct English learners for the purpose of showing language acquisition progress and gaining academic skills.
  6. Demonstrates understanding of students' language needs/proficiency levels and designs lessons to increase receptive and productive language development.
  7. Demonstrates cooperation, openness for growth and willingness to contribute to a team approach.
  8. Maintains confidentiality regarding all aspects of his/her work with children, staff members, and all aspects of his/her work.
  9. Monitor and assist "newcomer" students as needed in class, at lunch, and recess.
  10. Models' English communication for the purpose of developing student ability to communicate effectively in the English language.
  11. Promotes EL students' self-esteem through positive language instruction and encouragement.
  12. Demonstrates an understanding of the social cultural context of activities performed in class.
  13. Monitors students in a variety of educational environments (e.g., classroom, cafeteria, playground etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment.
  14. Attends required meetings and in-service presentations assigned for the purpose of acquiring and/or conveying information related to job functions.
  15. Additional Duties: Performs other duties related to the position, as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
Any combination of education and experience that could provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain knowledge and skills would be:
Education and Experience:
Option 1:
    • Completion of 48 semester or 60 quarter units from an accredited college/university (preferably in child development, education, special education, or related field).
    • AND
    • one (1) year of relevant experience.

Option 2:
    • High school diploma.
    • AND
    • two (2) years of experience as a Paraeducator aide or in a similar instructional/guidance role.

Temporary employees working less than 6 months do not receive benefits.
New employees will be fingerprinted upon hire and every five years thereafter and will have $58.50 deducted from their first paycheck to help defray the cost of fingerprinting. Non-licensed employees will have $58.50 deduction when their fingerprints are completed every five years. Fingerprint fees are subject to change.
The job offer is conditional until a report is returned from the FBI and Nevada Department of Public Safety that meets the standards of WCSD for employment purposes.
