Position Summary

The Assistant Grounds Manager - Flowers supports the planning, installation, care, and overall presentation of floral displays throughout Shanty Creek Resorts. Working closely with the Grounds Manager, this position helps ensure that flowers and ornamental plantings remain healthy, vibrant, seasonally appropriate, and consistent with Resort appearance standards.

This role provides day-to-day direction and training to assigned grounds employees, promotes safe and effective horticultural practices, and helps coordinate the people, materials, and schedules needed to maintain attractive guest-facing spaces. Success in this position directly supports the quality of the Resort environment and the overall guest experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Assist with the planning, design, installation, and ongoing maintenance of floral displays and ornamental plantings throughout the Resort.

Monitor plant health, growth, appearance, watering needs, soil conditions, and seasonal performance; identify and address concerns promptly.

Implement routine care practices, including planting, watering, fertilizing, pruning, deadheading, weeding, mulching, and related horticultural work.

Assist with pest, disease, and invasive-species identification and follow approved treatment and reporting practices.

Conduct regular inspections of flower beds, planters, and other assigned areas to ensure cleanliness, consistency, and adherence to Resort appearance standards.

Collaborate with the Grounds Manager to develop seasonal planting plans, work schedules, material needs, and budget recommendations.

Coordinate daily work assignments and provide clear direction to grounds employees supporting floral and landscape maintenance.

Train employees in proper plant-care techniques, safe work practices, equipment use, and Resort service expectations.

Monitor work quality and completion, provide timely feedback, and elevate performance or resource concerns to the Grounds Manager.

Maintain appropriate inventories of plants, soil amendments, tools, supplies, and related materials; communicate replenishment needs before shortages affect operations.

Operate and care for hand tools, powered equipment, irrigation components, and other grounds-maintenance resources in accordance with safety requirements.

Coordinate work around Resort operations, guest activity, special events, and changing weather conditions to minimize disruption and maintain attractive public spaces.

Support other grounds and landscaping priorities as operational needs require.

Leadership and Team Responsibilities

Model professionalism, teamwork, accountability, care for the property, and respect for guests and coworkers.

Provide employees with clear expectations, practical training, and the context needed to complete work successfully.

Promote a safe, organized, and positive work environment and address or report hazards promptly.

Help the Grounds Manager evaluate staffing, scheduling, training, and supervision needs during peak planting and maintenance periods.

Communicate progress, barriers, supply needs, and changing priorities in a timely manner.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent.

At least two years of experience in horticulture, landscaping, gardening, or grounds maintenance.

Working knowledge of plant care, soil preparation, watering, fertilization, pruning, pest management, and seasonal landscape practices.

Ability to organize work, follow schedules, and balance multiple priorities in an outdoor hospitality environment.

Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with employees, leaders, guests, vendors, and other departments.

Preferred Qualifications

Associate degree in horticulture, landscape management, or a related field.

Previous experience leading or supervising a grounds, landscaping, or horticulture team.

Certification or formal training in horticulture, landscape design, floral design, pesticide application, or a related discipline.

Experience maintaining floral displays or landscaped grounds in a resort, hospitality, golf, recreation, or other guest-facing environment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Competencies

Horticultural knowledge: Applies sound plant-care and landscape-maintenance practices to sustain healthy, attractive displays.

Attention to detail: Recognizes changes in plant health, cleanliness, presentation, or safety and responds promptly.

Leadership: Provides clear direction, practical coaching, and appropriate follow-up while contributing directly to the work.

Planning and organization: Anticipates seasonal needs, sequences work effectively, and protects time for priority tasks.

Guest awareness: Performs work with consideration for guest activity, special events, appearance standards, and the overall Resort experience.

Collaboration: Works effectively across departments and communicates changing needs, timelines, and barriers early.

Adaptability: Adjusts plans based on weather, plant conditions, staffing, events, and other operational requirements.

Safety and stewardship: Uses equipment and materials responsibly and demonstrates care for employees, guests, property, and the environment.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

This position works primarily outdoors and may be exposed to heat, cold, rain, sun, pollen, insects, soil, fertilizers, and other conditions typical of grounds and horticultural work. The role requires regular standing, walking, bending, kneeling, reaching, lifting, carrying, and use of hand or powered tools. The employee must be able to travel between Resort locations and perform the essential duties safely, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Schedule Expectations

Work schedules may vary based on season, weather, planting cycles, guest activity, and operational needs. Early mornings, weekends, holidays, or extended hours may occasionally be required.
