Job description

PURPOSE:
Position Summary: Assists the Organic Production Manager with the day-to-day operations of the Busby Farm. Works with the Organic Production Manager to maintain the organic certification compliance of the Busby Farm facility according to the National Organic Plan. Assist with management of farm livestock within an intensive grazing management system. Coordinates with the Principal Investigators on the various tasks which needed to be completed on their respective research plots on the Busby Farm. Assist with supervision of student and causal workers at the Busby Farm. Operates and maintains farm equipment as required to maintain the farm operations. Assist with scheduling and coordination of events and field days at Busby Farm. Maintains grounds and facilities at Busby Farm.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Assist with management and day-to-day operations of the Busby Farm.
  • Assist with the maintenance of organic certification for Busby Farm.
  • Assist with maintenance of required documentation of farm operations as required for organic certification.
  • Assist with management and maintenance of livestock and grazing systems.
  • Operate and maintain farm equipment.
  • Coordinate with researchers to facilitate research activities.
  • Assist with coordination of tours of the Busby Farm facility for various outside groups.
  • Supervise students and casual workers at Busby Farm.
  • Assist Lincoln faculty members with lab activities at the Busby Farm.
  • Maintain the grounds, equipment and facilities located at Busby Farm.
  • Maintain all livestock and research plot records.
  • Other duties as assigned.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics
  • General knowledge of day-to-day farm operations (animals, plants, soils, forestry, etc.)
  • Knowledge of cattle and small ruminant production.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to multitask.
  • Must be able to operate and maintain farm equipment. (tractors, skid steer, hay equipment, etc.)
  • Knowledge of organic agriculture production.
  • Must be punctual and dependable with ability to initiate and complete tasks in a timely manner.
  • Good computer skills.

Certifications, Licenses, registrations
  • Associate or Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture or closely related field required.
  • Knowledge of organic agricultural production is strongly preferred.
  • Experience working with livestock is required.
  • Experience operating and maintaining farm equipment is required.
  • Valid driver's license required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Light sedentary office work.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work for prolonged periods in inclement weather conditions.
