The Assistant Sailing Director supports the Sailing Director in managing the daily operations of the UNH Community Sailing Centre. This role assists with staff supervision, program coordination, and risk management to ensure a safe and engaging experience for participants. In the Sailing Director's absence, the Assistant Sailing Director serves as the primary point of contact for program staff and participants.

Duties/Responsibilities

1. Risk Management & Safety (50%)

  • Applies risk management, conflict resolution, and behavior management strategies.
  • Effectively communicates behavioral and safety concerns to counselors, participants, and parents/guardians.
  • Documents incidents and accidents and provides follow-up for reports.
  • Facilitates communication between staff and parents/guardians regarding camper behavioral concerns.

2. Program Administration & Staff Support (30%)

  • Assists in the administrative and operational oversight of UNH Community Sailing Centre staff.
  • Participates in the interviewing, training, and evaluation of staff, including pre-camp training sessions.
  • Implements program changes, including but not limited to staffing adjustments and inclement weather activities.
  • Creates organizational systems to track camp attendance.

3. Equipment & Facility Management (10%)

  • Maintains inventory of boats and center equipment. Forwards recommendations for purchases to Campus Recreation professional staff.
  • Assists with general boat maintenance and upkeep of the fleet.

4. Customer Service & Professionalism (10%)

  • Presents a professional appearance and maintains a high standard of customer service.
  • Develops and organizes daily activity rotations to enhance the participant experience.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Acceptable Education & Experience:

  • Two Year post-secondary education.

Required Licenses & Certifications:

  • Employment contingent of the successful completion of a background check and the following Campus Recreation provided training: USNH Protection of Minors, 'CPR, AED & First-Aid', Bloodborne Pathogens, and Risk Management training.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong Supervision and Safety Awareness: Ability to maintain constant vigilance and ensure the safety and well-being of youth participants in waterfront settings.
  • Program Implementation and Creativity: Knowledge of planning and delivering engaging, age- appropriate activities while fostering a fun and inclusive environment.
  • Risk Management and Emergency Response Skills: Familiarity with risk management procedures, with the ability to respond effectively to routine and emergency situations, including administering
  • basic first aid.
  • Effective Communication and Team Collaboration: Strong interpersonal skills to communicate
  • effectively with participants, parents, and colleagues, as well as the ability to work collaboratively within a team environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Level 1 American Canoe Association Certification.
  • Customer Service Experience: Demonstrated experience providing excellent customer service, including communication with parents and guardians.
  • Background in Recreation or Education: Coursework or a degree in recreation, education, adolescent development, or a related field.
