Job description

We are seeking a hands-on, operationally focused Manufacturing Controller to lead the company's accounting and operational finance functions within a dynamic production environment. This role is highly integrated with manufacturing operations and requires a finance leader who is comfortable spending significant time on the production floor — partnering directly with operations, inventory, and production leadership.
The ideal candidate understands how manufacturing workflows, labor utilization, production scheduling, material usage, throughput, and operational efficiencies directly impact financial performance and profitability. This individual will serve as a key business partner to leadership by translating operational activity into actionable financial insights that support smarter decision-making across the organization.
This is not a back-office accounting role. We are seeking a highly operational finance leader who can balance strong accounting fundamentals with hands-on operational business partnership in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. Time on the production floor — engaging directly with plant operations, understanding workflows, and identifying opportunities — is a central expectation of this role.
The Controller will also oversee and mentor a small accounting team of approximately 3–4 employees while helping build scalable processes and operational visibility as the business continues to grow.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Operational Finance & Manufacturing Partnership
  • Spend significant, regular time on the production floor engaging directly with plant leadership and operations teams — this is a core expectation of the role, not an occasional activity
  • Develop deep familiarity with manufacturing workflows, throughput, production scheduling, and operational processes in order to translate floor activity into meaningful financial insights
  • Partner directly with plant leadership to understand labor utilization, production bottlenecks, and operational efficiency opportunities
  • Monitor and analyze production trends, labor efficiencies, material usage, scrap/waste, inventory movement, and margin performance
  • Participate in operational meetings and support leadership with data-driven decision-making
  • Develop and track operational KPIs and manufacturing performance metrics
Accounting & Financial Leadership
  • Lead all day-to-day accounting operations including general ledger, AP/AR oversight, reconciliations, payroll coordination, and month-end close
  • Prepare accurate and timely monthly financial statements and operational reporting packages
  • Maintain internal controls and ensure compliance with accounting standards and company policies
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, cash flow planning, and variance analysis
  • Assist leadership with pricing analysis, profitability analysis, and operational planning initiatives
  • Coordinate with external CPA firms, banking partners, and auditors as needed
Cost Accounting & Inventory Management
  • Oversee all cost accounting functions including job costing, BOM analysis, labor costing, overhead allocation, and variance analysis
  • Ensure accurate inventory valuation, inventory controls, cycle counts, and physical inventory processes
  • Analyze manufacturing costs and operational variances to identify opportunities for improvement and margin enhancement
  • Partner with operations leadership to improve inventory management, efficiency, and production reporting accuracy
Process Improvement & Systems
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting workflows, reporting accuracy, operational visibility, and internal controls
  • Support ERP optimization, reporting automation, and process improvement initiatives
  • Help establish scalable systems and procedures to support future company growth
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives across finance and operational reporting functions
Team Leadership
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a small accounting team of approximately 3–4 employees
  • Foster a collaborative, accountable, and service-oriented finance culture
  • Provide hands-on leadership while helping the team grow and scale with the business
  • Partner cross-functionally with operations, production, purchasing, and leadership teams
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required
  • 7–12+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience within manufacturing or production environments
  • Strong manufacturing accounting, cost accounting, and inventory accounting experience required
  • Proven experience partnering directly with plant operations and manufacturing leadership teams
  • Strong understanding of operational finance drivers within manufacturing environments
  • Experience working within inventory-intensive and operationally complex businesses
  • ERP systems experience required
  • Advanced Excel and financial analysis skills required
  • Printing, packaging, graphics, industrial manufacturing, or related production experience strongly preferred
PREFERRED BACKGROUND
  • Manufacturing Controller
  • Plant Controller
  • Operations Finance Manager
  • Division Controller within a manufacturing environment
  • Cost accounting leadership with operational manufacturing exposure
Note: Candidates whose experience has been primarily corporate accounting without direct operational manufacturing partnership may not be the best fit for this opportunity.
KEY COMPETENCIES
  • Operationally minded with a strong presence on the manufacturing floor — equally comfortable in the accounting office and walking the plant
  • Highly analytical with strong problem-solving and decision-making capabilities
  • Strong business partnership and communication skills
  • Hands-on leadership style
  • Process improvement mindset
  • Ability to thrive in fast-paced entrepreneurial environments
COMPENSATION
  • Base Salary: $140,000 – $170,000 DOE
  • Bonus eligibility up to 20% depending upon company performance
  • Comprehensive benefits package – Medical, Dental, Vision, 401K
  • PTO

WHY THIS OPPORTUNITY STANDS OUT
  • Highly visible role with direct interaction with executive leadership
  • Opportunity to influence both financial and operational performance
  • Hands-on role with strong operational integration — meaningful production floor presence expected and valued
  • Collaborative and entrepreneurial culture
  • Ability to build scalable processes and drive meaningful improvements across the business
