Shares responsibility for committee and department assignments including administrative, supervisory, and other functions. Founded in 1971 in Long Island City, Queens, LaGuardia Community College is one of seven community colleges of the City University of New York (CUNY).

LaGuardia offers more than sixty associate degree programs and more than fifty workforce training, ESOL, GED, and pre-college programs. In 2023, LaGuardia served approximately 24,000 students. More than one-third of LaGuardia’s degree-seeking students are born outside the United States; they come from 136 countries and speak 43 heritage languages.

Sixty percent are first-generation college students. Virtually all LaGuardia students are ethnic minorities (89 percent), 58 percent are women, 27 percent are over the age of 25. Forty-six percent of associate degree students are Hispanic.

Upon graduation most students transfer to four-year colleges, typically in CUNY, to complete their baccalaureate degrees. Graduates of career programs such as Nursing, Computer Technology, and Veterinary Technology enter the workforce. LaGuardia ranked fifth among U.S.

community colleges in economic mobility – moving low-income students into the middle class and beyond – in studies by Stanford University (2017) and the Brookings Institution (2020). The Humanities Department at LaGuardia Community College invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor to join its Film & Television program in Fall 2026.

The Film & Television program offers courses in film history and theory, as well as practice-based courses in screenwriting and video production. We seek applicants who can contribute to this curriculum and support students in developing both critical and creative approaches to cinema and screen-based storytelling. Reporting to the Chair of the Humanities Department, the Assistant Professor in Film & Television will be responsible primarily for teaching courses in film studies (history and theory), with the ability to contribute to introductory video production and/or First-Year Seminar courses.

The teaching assignment is 24 contact hours per academic year (generally equivalent to 3–4 courses per semester, depending on contact hours for each course). Courses may be scheduled during the day or evening, based on program needs. Although teaching modalities may include in-person, online, and hybrid formats, the position requires a significant on-campus teaching presence.

Additional responsibilities include contributing to curriculum assessment, program review, and departmental initiatives; supporting experiential learning, internships, and industry partnerships; working with the Film & TV lab staff to facilitate instructional use of lab/production facilities and equipment; and participating in other departmental and college service, professional development, and scholarly activities. The department is especially interested in candidates whose primary training is in film or cinema studies, who are committed to teaching and mentoring a diverse student population at an urban community college, and who can also contribute to introductory video production courses. QUALIFICATIONS Ph.D.

degree in area(s) of experience or equivalent. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Terminal degree (MFA or PhD) in Film Studies, Cinema Studies, or a closely related field College-level teaching experience, including experience teaching diverse student populations Record of scholarly research and/or creative practice appropriate to a tenure-track appointment Demonstrated ability to teach effectively and support student success Ability to collaborate with colleagues and administration Demonstrated filmmaking experience Ability to teach courses in Video Production Proficiency in digital video production, including camera systems, lighting and sound, and non-linear editing software (e.g., Adobe Creative Cloud tools such as Premiere Pro, After Effects, Audition, and Photoshop, as well as DaVinci Resolve) COMPENSATION $57,252 - $82,663 CUNY offers faculty a competitive compensation and benefits package covering health insurance, pension and retirement benefits, paid parental leave, and savings programs.
