Job description

POSITION SUMMARY

The Excavator Operator performs trenching, grading, and material handling for utility, roadway, and site preparation projects. This role operates excavators of various sizes with multiple attachments, following survey layouts, grade stakes, and project specifications. Work includes digging, backfilling, loading trucks, placing structures, and maintaining OSHA-compliant trench protection. Operators must work safely around utilities, spotters, and active traffic while meeting production and quality standards.


YOUR ROLE

  • Operate excavators for trenching, grading, backfilling, and material loading according to project layouts and specifications.
  • Read and follow grade stakes, bluetops, flow line information, and engineered cut sheets to achieve precise elevations.
  • Use attachments such as buckets, compaction wheels, hydraulic hammers, and lifting rigs.
  • Install bedding materials, mix lime or cement into subgrade, and manage soil moisture for compaction.
  • Follow OSHA-compliant trenching, shoring, and sloping methods based on soil classification.
  • Perform daily equipment inspections, complete machine checklists, and report issues promptly.
  • Operate excavators around utilities, following potholing protocols, locate marks, and spotter guidance.
  • Load haul trucks efficiently, evenly, and within capacity limits.
  • Assist with rigging and lifting large structures, using proper signaling and communication.
  • Coordinate with Foreman, Truck Drivers, and crew on excavation sequencing and haul routes.
  • Maintain safe, clean trenches and work zones for traffic and follow-up crews.
  • Document daily production, including loads, excavation footage, and completion reports.
  • Adhere to PPE requirements, lockout/tagout, confined space, and overhead line safety protocols.
  • Perform traffic control and flagging duties as required to ensure the safety of workers, equipment, and the traveling public.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


WHAT YOU BRING

  • 2–5 years of experience operating excavators for civil construction, utilities, or site work.
  • Ability to read and interpret grade stakes, cut sheets, and survey layouts.
  • Knowledge of OSHA trenching and excavation safety requirements.
  • Skilled in using multiple excavator attachments and performing precision work.
  • Strong understanding of soil classification, compaction, and moisture control.
  • Experience with rigging, signaling, and safe lifting practices preferred.
  • Commitment to safe work practices, production goals, and equipment care.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Work is performed outdoors year-round in all weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and other harsh environments. Must be able to sit for extended periods while operating equipment and perform tasks involving standing, bending, and kneeling. Regularly lifts and carries up to 50 lbs. and occasionally up to 100 lbs. with assistance when handling tools, materials, or attachments. Must tolerate noise, vibration, and dust from excavation operations and maintain situational awareness around moving equipment and active traffic.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

May require travel within Texas. Overnight or out-of-town stays may be needed based on project location.
