Position Description
Goodfellow Bros. (GBI) is a large heavy-civil contractor with operations throughout the West Coast & Hawaii. GBI has always maintained that our employees are our greatest asset, and we are now seeking to add to our team. We are looking for an Estimator to join our team in Reno, NV.
Position Summary
The Estimator is responsible for developing accurate, timely, and competitive estimates for public and private heavy civil construction projects. This role evaluates project opportunities, develops pricing strategies, and prepares complete bid and proposal packages. The Estimator also supports project teams after award by providing estimating insight, assisting with change order pricing and issue resolution, and helping ensure a successful transition from pursuit through project execution. This position may also provide guidance and mentorship to less experienced team members.
Position Description
Estimating & Bid Development
• Review project plans, specifications, soils reports, and other bid documents to understand project requirements and develop an overall estimating strategy.
• Define project scope and determine appropriate self-perform and subcontracted work.
• Evaluate bid document revisions and assess their impact on project scope, cost, schedule, and risk.
• Coordinate and oversee quantity takeoffs while identifying key estimating considerations including access, phasing, production constraints, and major scope drivers.
• Develop detailed activity level pricing and durations using labor, equipment, materials, subcontractor pricing, historical cost information, and production data.
Pre Bid Planning & Site Investigation
• Participate in pre bid meetings and project site visits to identify conditions, constraints, risks, and opportunities that may impact the estimate.
• Incorporate site findings and project specific considerations into the estimating approach.
Subcontractor & Supplier Coordination
• Identify, solicit, and coordinate with subcontractors, suppliers, and service providers.
• Review proposals, request clarifications, and confirm appropriate scope coverage to minimize gaps and improve pricing accuracy.
Cost, Schedule & Risk Management
• Develop accurate and competitive estimates that support project profitability and regional objectives.
• Identify and communicate project risks and opportunities while supporting the development of appropriate mitigation strategies.
• Prepare project schedules and ensure estimating assumptions align with anticipated production and execution plans.
Bid Review & Submission
• Prepare final estimates, schedules, executive summaries, and other required bid deliverables.
• Coordinate peer and management reviews and address outstanding items prior to bid submission.
• Maintain organized estimating documentation, pricing support, and bid records for future reference or turnover to the project team when work is awarded.
Preconstruction & Project Support
• Provide conceptual and budgetary estimates during preconstruction to support client planning and relationship development.
• Assist project teams with change order pricing, additional scope estimates, and other estimating needs throughout project execution.
Business Development
• Build and maintain relationships with clients, subcontractors, suppliers, and industry partners.
• Help identify future project opportunities and support the development of a strong regional project pipeline.

This position offers a salary range of $125,000 to $175,000, depending on relevant experience, qualifications, and skills.

Position Requirements
Required Education, Experience, and Technical Knowledge
  • Candidates must have the legal right to work in the US without employer sponsorship.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 3-5+ years of heavy civil construction experience with estimating responsibilities.
  • Experience with earthwork, underground utilities, concrete, grading, paving, structural excavation, and site development.
  • Strong understanding of public and private work procurement methods.
  • Experience managing projects up to $20M preferred.
  • Proficiency with HCSS HeavyBid, HCSS HeavyJob, Microsoft Excel, Word, and Project.
  • Valid Driver's License and acceptable driving record.
