Job description

Description and requirements

At Skanska, we're shaping the way we live, work and connect. As one of the world's largest construction and development companies, we work together with customers, communities and partners to shape a better society.

You will be working in the Technology & Sustainability department where we harness digital transformation and innovation to meet ambitious climate goals and deliver sustainable solutions for our customers.

We are currently looking for an Assistant Environmental Sustainability Manager, who will help shape the environmental performance of the M54-M6 Link Road in South Staffordshire.

This is a fantastic opportunity to play a key role on a major National Highways scheme featuring 2.5 km of new dual carriageway, significant junction reconstructions, and extensive earthworks. Working alongside the Environmental Manager and a skilled project team, you'll help drive high standards of environmental compliance, support ecological mitigation, coordinate inspections, and champion best-practice environmental management across a large and complex infrastructure site.

The scale and pace of this project make it an exciting role for someone who is organised, proactive, and eager to make a real impact. You'll work closely with site teams and stakeholders, helping to embed environmental excellence into day-to-day delivery while contributing to a project that will leave a lasting legacy for the area.

As the Assistant Environmental Sustainability Manager, you will:

  • Monitor, record, and communicate progress on environmental activities across the project.
  • Report, investigate, and support the close-out of environmental incidents in line with the Environmental Management System (EMS).
  • Identify key environmental risks and concerns, helping to ensure effective mitigation measures are in place.
  • Support the delivery of environmental aspects of the works, including vegetation clearance, archaeological activities, and ecological surveys.
  • Provide clear environmental advice and guidance to project teams, and assist with securing required legal consents, licences, and exemptions.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with regulators, clients, and other external stakeholders.
  • Identify opportunities for sustainability innovation and collaborate with other disciplines to embed practical improvements across the project.

We are looking for:

  • A relevant environmental qualification, such as a degree or equivalent in Environmental Management, Environmental Science, Ecology, Sustainability, or a related discipline.
  • Experience working in construction or infrastructure environments, ideally on large, complex, multi-disciplinary civil engineering projects.
  • Good understanding of UK environmental legislation and compliance requirements, including ecology, pollution prevention, waste management, water quality, and environmental permitting.
  • Experience supporting environmental compliance on site, including inspections, audits, reporting, and driving improvement actions.
  • Strong organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to support multiple work fronts in a fast-paced project environment.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the confidence to engage effectively with engineers, subcontractors, designers, and external stakeholders.

What we offer:

  • 24/7 digital GP service for you and your family
  • Financial wellbeing and employee assistance
  • Professional development
  • Enhanced family benefits (including maternity, paternity, dependants and parental bereavement leave)
