What is an assistant engineering manager?

Assistant Engineering Managers support the Engineering Manager in overseeing engineering projects, coordinating teams, and ensuring that technical tasks are completed efficiently and on schedule. They help manage day-to-day operations, assist with project planning, and often serve as a bridge between engineers and upper management. Their role may also include monitoring budgets, ensuring safety standards, and troubleshooting technical issues. This position is ideal for someone with strong technical expertise and leadership skills aiming to advance into higher management roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an assistant engineering manager?

To thrive as an Assistant Engineering Manager, you need a solid background in engineering principles, project management experience, and typically a bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with technical tools like AutoCAD, project management software (e.g., Microsoft Project), and knowledge of industry standards or certifications (such as PMP or Lean Six Sigma) are often required. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills are vital for coordinating teams and ensuring project goals are met. These skills and qualifications are crucial for delivering successful engineering projects on time and within budget while fostering a productive team environment.

What are some typical challenges an assistant engineering manager faces when transitioning from an individual contributor to a leadership role?

One common challenge for new Assistant Engineering Managers is balancing hands-on technical work with leadership responsibilities such as team coordination, mentoring, and project oversight. Adapting to this dual role requires strong time management and communication skills, as you'll need to guide your team while still contributing your technical expertise. Additionally, you may encounter situations where you must resolve conflicts or make decisions that impact project timelines and team morale. Support from senior management and a willingness to learn from feedback can help you navigate these challenges successfully.

Job description

Summary

Centrus is expanding-and we're looking for an Assistant Engineering Manager who's ready to help shape the future of our centrifuge fabrication capabilities. In this role, you'll support major facility growth efforts, guide technical decisionmaking, and help lead a team responsible for the safe, efficient development and modernization of critical fabrication systems.

You'll partner across engineering, construction, operations, safety, and project management to ensure our expansion projects move forward with precision and compliance. If you thrive in fastmoving, highly technical environments and enjoy solving complex engineering challenges with a crossfunctional team, this role offers an exciting opportunity to make a meaningful impact.

What You'll Be Doing

You assist the Engineering Manager by coordinating daily engineering activities and providing technical leadership for centrifuge fabrication equipment and facility expansion systems. You help oversee the development, installation, modification, and optimization of specialized fabrication tools and supporting infrastructure-always ensuring compliance with safety, regulatory, nuclear handling, and security requirements.

Your work includes supporting troubleshooting and system reliability improvements, contributing to project schedules, cost estimates, technical specifications, and procurement packages, and engaging in reviews, hazard analyses, and readiness evaluations. You help validate engineering documentation, monitor contractor and vendor performance, and keep senior leadership informed on system performance, project progress, and engineering risks.

We'd Love to Hear from Candidates with

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Nuclear, or Chemical Engineering
  • 5-10 years of engineering experience in advanced equipment design, fabrication systems, or regulated environments
  • Experience leading engineering projects or small technical teams
  • Strong knowledge of fabrication processes, rotating machinery, tooling systems, or production equipment
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Qlevel security clearance
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and analytical skills

A Successful Candidate Brings

  • Master's degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Nuclear, or Chemical Engineering
  • Experience with centrifuge fabrication equipment, custom process systems, or facility expansion projects
  • Background in DOE, NNSA, aerospace, nuclear, or other highly regulated industries
  • Familiarity with standards such as ASME, ANSI, or NQA1
