Job description

Civil Service Title- Assistant Mechanical Engineer
* IN ORDER TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION CANDIDATE MUST BE SERVING PERMANENTLY IN THE TITLE, OR BE REACHABLE ON THE OPEN-COMPETITIVE LIST.
The New York City Department of Transportation, Division of Bridges is responsible for managing the full life cycle of over 800 bridges and tunnels and over 600 retaining walls, ensuring safety of the public and ensuring mobility for all users. Team members may work on major project designs, oversee construction, oversee maintenance activities, perform engineering reviews and quality assurance tasks on some of the most iconic and complex projects in the City.
Perform engineering project management & trades field work under supervision of senior engineers. Perform flag repair work, field visit, inspections & respond to emergencies. Complete reports and assist in other office work as directed by the engineers, work at Movable Bridge Electro-Mechanical unit maintains, operates, and conducts PM on 23 movable bridges citywide and 4 Fixed East River Bridges. These bridges require continuous monitoring, inspection, and analysis of all electromechanical systems around the clock to preserve on-demand and safe operation for pedestrian, vehicular and marine traffic. The purpose of this maintenance program is to perform critical preventive maintenance on different east river and movable bridges across NYC which are performed by contractors and inhouse crew on various bridges

Ability to perform inspections in all weather conditions which will include nights and weekends. A strong background in AutoCAD and MS office suite is required.
Ability to drive city owned vehicle, and possess a driver's license valid in the state of New York with no restrictions. This license must be maintained throughout the duration of employment in this position.

Minimum Qualifications

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or mechatronics and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in mechanical engineering work; or
2. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in mechanical engineering technology and three years of full-time satisfactory experience in mechanical engineering work; or
3. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and a master's degree from an accredited college in mechanical engineering or mechatronics.


Preferred Skills
Ability to perform inspections in all weather conditions which will include nights and weekends. A strong background in AutoCAD and MS office suite is required. Ability to drive city owned vehicle. A Ability to drive city owned vehicle, and possess a driver's license valid in the state of New York with no restrictions. This license must be maintained throughout the duration of employment in this position.
