Position Summary:
The William & Mary School of Education (SOE) invites applications for the Assistant Dean for Licensure and Clinical Experiences.
The Assistant Dean for Licensure and Clinical Experiences is a full-time appointment in the School of Education (SOE) and reports to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.
This position fills a critical need by directing and coordinating field and clinical experiences (observation, fieldwork, practica, internships, and student teaching) across all SOE programs and degree levels. The Assistant Dean provides school-wide leadership by aligning the faculty/staff coordinators who manage practica and internships across other SOE programs (e.g., counseling, school psychology, leadership).
The Assistant Dean serves as the SOE's primary liaison to the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) for Virginia licensure regulations/endorsement requirements and for Virginia program approval submissions relevant to educator preparation. The Assistant Dean collaborates as a peer system owner with the Assistant Dean for Assessment, Accreditation, and Accountability to align clinical evidence workflows, shared definitions, timelines, and data quality standards that support continuous improvement and accreditation reporting.
The Assistant Dean provides matrix leadership by supervising graduate assistants; providing functional leadership and support to university supervisors/clinical faculty; and convening the Clinical Experiences Council as an internal coordinating council of SOE faculty/staff responsible for field/clinical components across programs.
Job Description:

Salary: Up to $100,000 commensurate with experience and internal alignment.
Required Qualifications:
- Master's degree in education or a closely related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Demonstrated experience with field/clinical supervision and partnership-based work in K-12 schools and/or relevant professional practice settings.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and implement policies/procedures; strong organizational, analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrated ability to manage sensitive records and maintain accurate documentation/data in appropriate systems (e.g., Banner or equivalent).
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, students, and external partners.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience leading field/clinical experiences across multiple program types (e.g., teacher education and at least one of the following: counseling, school psychology, leadership, advanced programs).
- Demonstrated knowledge of Virginia licensure regulations and experience working with VDOE processes/program approvals.
- Familiarity with accreditation expectations connected to clinical preparation (e.g., CAEP, CACREP, NASP) and the use of evidence for continuous improvement.
Conditions of Employment:
This position requires access to university information systems and/or sensitive data (e.g., student records, placement records, licensure documentation). The incumbent is expected to adhere to information security policies and all applicable laws and regulations.
Job Duties:
65% Virginia Licensure Operations, Field/Clinical Systems, and Partnerships
- Design, implement, and oversee SOE-wide field and clinical experience systems across all programs and degree levels, including shared timelines, readiness requirements, documentation standards, and placement decision protocols.
- VDOE Licensure and VDOE Program Approval
- Serve as SOE's primary liaison to VDOE for Virginia licensure and program approval matters: interpret and track any shifts in Virginia licensure requirements; consult with program leadership/faculty on alignment; coordinate VDOE submissions/communications relevant to educator preparation.
- Licensure processing (teaching): counsel and monitor candidates' progress to ensure they meet licensure requirements; audit and maintain records (transcript/test-score verification); enter state-mandated exam scores in Banner (or equivalent SIS); complete and submit teaching licensure forms for Virginia and other states as required.
- Provide eligibility letters for students and recent graduates
Clinical Partnerships and Clinical Placements MOU Management
- Provides high-level strategy, administrative, and organizational support to all 3 departments across all field and clinical placements in SOE
- Clinical placement partnership development and maintenance
- Provide leadership on developing and renewing MOUs and ensuring the terms of the MOU are being met by all parties. Acts as the signatory authority on all clinical placement MOUs for the School of Education.
Accreditation and Compliance
- Provides accountability for data review and continuous improvement with related to field and clinical placements
- Sets shared expectations and processes across all programs
- Aligns clinical work with accreditation and partnership needs
- Convenes program liaisons to ensure quality management and consistency
- Ensures program handbooks are reviewed regularly and kept up to date
- Convene and chair the Clinical Experiences Council as an internal coordinating council of SOE faculty/staff who oversee practica/internships/fieldwork across programs, aligning standards, calendars, documentation, and improvement priorities.
- Oversee and make decisions related to placement arrangements, including exceptions/changes, and establish consistent escalation pathways for placement concerns and serious student issues in coordination with clinical coordinators, program leadership, and university policies.
- Establish and enforce compliance processes tied to field/clinical participation (e.g., background checks/partner requirements, readiness "gates," documentation for placement interruption/removal).
- Maintain and manage the field/clinical placement database and related records; ensure data integrity and timely completion of required documentation, including alignment with SOE assessment/data needs.
- Provide functional leadership for university supervisors/clinical faculty across programs (recruitment/hiring, onboarding expectations, assignment coordination, monitoring evaluation completion, ongoing communication and support).
- Coordinate administrative workflows for the clinical enterprise including supervisor compensation/honoraria and reimbursements, in collaboration with appropriate SOE staff and Associate Deans as needed.
20% Quality Improvement:
- Analyze evidence from field/clinical experiences (candidate performance signals, supervisor evaluations, partner feedback, placement quality trends) and recommend improvements to policy, practice, and procedures.
- Lead periodic review and improvement of readiness requirements, placement processes, and clinical decision protocols; propose revisions to the Associate Deans and relevant governance groups.
- Lead supervisor calibration and support improvement of evaluation instruments/rubrics in collaboration with program leadership and the Assistant Dean for Assessment, Accreditation, and Accountability.
- Use Clinical Experiences Council and other stakeholder groups to identify cross-program needs and implement coordinated improvements.
- Provide periodic summaries of clinical quality assurance, partnership health, and system improvements for SOE leadership.
15% Training and Support:
- Develop and implement a systematic plan of training and support for university supervisors/clinical faculty, partner mentors, candidates, and SOE field/clinical coordinators.
- Conduct orientations and ongoing training for supervisors and partners; provide responsive support for emergent placement, evaluation, and compliance needs.
- Support candidates and supervisors in navigating field/clinical expectations and documentation requirements, coordinating with program leadership as needed.
