Assistant Craftsman (Apprentice)

Job description

Primary Purpose

  • Learn to create new patterns or editing existing patterns to Support the Design function in the NYWS with timely creation of patterns and prototype samples from Design Card specifications and concept drawings. Support PD, Design and Sourcing with patterns in CAD, facilitating sampling and production at vendor factories.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assistants will work under the direct supervision of a mentor, a Master craftsman, through various, hands-on projects.
  • Assistants will learn how to interpret sketches from the Design team and translate them into clear and technically correct patterns.
  • Assistants will work hands on with a Master craftsman to learn appropriate construction techniques and problem solving to meet design intent and standards.
  • Learn multiple digital patternmaking software.
  • Prepare costing patterns and information for initial costing.
  • Learn to digitize hard paper patterns.
  • Complete sampling mock-ups for illustration of construction and problem solving.
  • Provide technical support for sample production in NYWS

Education & Experience Requirements

  • 0-1 years experience in patternmaking and product development.
  • Ability to learn on the fly and some familiarity with table tools like hammers, pliers, scissors etc.
  • Willing to learn how to operate leather working machinery including sewing machines
  • Proficiency in the English language, reading and writing; Spanish and/or Italian helpful
  • Ability to collaborate and partner with internal and external colleagues.
  • Goal orientated and comfortable with meeting tight deadlines
  • Ability to deal with ambiguity and changing priorities
  • Flexibility to adapt as the business requires and to perform efficiently and effectively in a fast-paced environment
