The Facility – VA North Texas Health Care System Mental Health Service VANTHCS MHS has a full range of mental health services including general adult psychiatry, geriatrics, psychosomatic medicine, substance abuse sub-specialty services, trauma services, psychosocial rehabilitation and recovery programs, comprehensive homeless programs, peer support services, opiate replacement programs, Intensive Community Mental Health Recovery (ICMHR), vocational rehabilitation programs, domiciliary based programs and inpatient services. There is ongoing active research in addiction psychiatry, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, mood disorders, and homelessness. Clinical training programs exist for medical students, psychiatry residents and fellows, clinical psychologists, social workers and nurses. VA North Texas Health Care System has an active relationship with the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center as our primary affiliate, as well as other local teaching institutions.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform, in conjunction with the Medical Physicist, treatment planning for SRS/SRT, IMRT, IGRT, and SBRT/SABR
  • Design treatment plans by means of computer and/or manual computation that will deliver a prescribed radiation dose and field placement technique in accordance with the VA Radiation Oncologist prescription to a defined tumor volume
  • Consider dose-limiting structures in the design of treatment plans and document dose in accordance with VA Radiation Oncologist prescription
  • Assist with treatment simulations and tumor localization on dedicated devices, including computer tomography and MRI, when indicated, for radiation therapy treatment planning
  • Assist in planning and oversee fabrication of compensating filters, custom shields, wedges, and other beam modifying devices or provide the needed information to outside vendors when such work is outsourced. Dosimetrist will function as liaison with the AO to obtain the needed funding for outsourced work
  • Assist in the planning, oversee and supervise production of molds, casts, and other immobilization devices
  • Assist radiation therapy staff in the implementation of the treatment plan including the correct use of immobilization devices, compensators, wedges, field arrangements, and any treatment variable associated with treatment planning implementation and provide written documentation of any non-compliance observed
  • Shall perform calculation methods for the delivery of prescribed dose, and subsequent documentation in patient files, and verification of the mathematical accuracy of all calculations using a system established by the Medical Physicist
  • Shall provide dosimetry and technical support to Medical Physicist, in radiation protection, qualitative and quantitative machine calibration, and quality assurance of the radiation therapy equipment. Assist in the application of specific methods of dosimetry, including ion chamber, TLD, or film measurements as directed by the Medical Physicist
  • Provide methods to import and analyze outside dosimetry information from LDR, HDR and EBRT treatments; and integrate this information, within reasonable limitations, into new treatment plans for the patient. In addition, the Medical Dosimetrists will be able to provide dosimetry information to outside clinics or other services as requested.
Qualifications/Requirements
  • Certified Medical Domestrist (CMD) by the Medical Domestrist Certification Board (MDCB)
  • At least two (2) years on continuous work experience witin the last 3 years as a CMD
  • Knowledge of the following procedures, equipment and software:
    • Two (2) years of experience - Documentation detailing experience in performing QA procedures.
    • One (1) year of experience - Documentation detailing CMD experience in a healthcare system that is ACR certified.
    • One (1) year of experience - Varian Linear Accelerators: Novalis TX with Brain Lab or ExacTrac, TrueBeam with Rapid Arc (or equivalent).
    • One (1) year of experience - Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) including Cone Beam CT (following standards of TG-142).
    • One (1) year of experience - Eclipse treatment planning system; and ARIA record & verify system, including the following treatment modalities: SRS, SRT, SBRT, and IMRT (following standards of TG-53)
    • One (1) year of experience - MapCheck and ArcCheck (or equivalent)
    • One (1) year of experience – Philips and Siemens CT Simulator (or equivalent)

  • Length of Contract – 12 month with options to extend up to 4 years.
