What are Assistant Bridge Inspectors?

Assistant Bridge Inspectors are professionals who support the inspection and evaluation of bridges and related structures to ensure their safety and compliance with regulations. They assist senior inspectors by conducting field inspections, recording observations, taking measurements, and sometimes collecting samples. Their responsibilities also include preparing inspection reports and helping identify maintenance or repair needs. This role requires knowledge of bridge construction, safety protocols, and may involve working in challenging outdoor environments.

What are some typical challenges faced by Assistant Bridge Inspectors during field inspections?

Assistant Bridge Inspectors often encounter challenges such as working in varying weather conditions, accessing hard-to-reach structural elements, and ensuring safety while operating near traffic or over water. They must be detail-oriented to accurately assess bridge components and document findings, sometimes under time constraints. Effective communication is also crucial, as they frequently collaborate with senior inspectors, engineers, and maintenance crews to report issues and recommend repairs.

The main difference between an Assistant Bridge Inspector and a Bridge Inspector lies in experience and responsibility. Assistant Bridge Inspectors support senior inspectors by performing inspections and manual tasks, while Bridge Inspectors lead inspections, evaluate structural conditions, and make critical decisions. Both roles require similar certifications and work in comparable environments, but the Bridge Inspector position involves greater responsibility and expertise.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Assistant Bridge Inspector, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Assistant Bridge Inspector, you need knowledge of structural engineering principles, attention to detail, and typically a degree or coursework in civil engineering or a related field. Familiarity with inspection tools, data collection devices, and software like AutoCAD or Bridge Management Systems is common, and certifications such as OSHA safety training can be required. Strong observational skills, teamwork, and clear communication are crucial for accurate reporting and collaboration on-site. Job description

We Make Everything Around Us Better

At PRIME AE, thatโ€™s not a slogan, itโ€™s how we work.

Every bridge, building, campus, park, and roadway we design exists to improve how people live, move, learn, and connect. Through architecture, engineering, planning, and consulting, we partner with clients to create thoughtful, practical solutions that leave communities stronger than we found them.

If you want your work to matter, and to be surrounded by smart, collaborative people who care about doing things the right way, youโ€™ll feel at home here.

Who We Are:

PRIME AE Group, Inc. is a nationally ranked, full-service architecture and engineering firm with 24 offices across 10 states and a team of 500+ professionals. For nearly two decades, weโ€™ve partnered with public and private sector clients across transportation, education, healthcare, municipal, federal, commercial, and recreational markets.

Weโ€™re growing, strategically and intentionally. That means expanding our capabilities, investing in our people, and building teams that are positioned for long-term success.

The Opportunity:

We are currently seeking a Bridge Inspector to join our Bridge Inspection Group in our New Albany or Indianapolis, IN or Jacksonville, FL offices. This is an opportunity to contribute to critical infrastructure safety by inspecting bridges and related structures, ensuring they meet federal, state, and local requirements. As part of our collaborative team, youโ€™ll play a key role in delivering accurate assessments, well-documented reports, and supporting safe, efficient transportation networks across the region.

What Youโ€™ll Do:

As a Bridge Inspector, you will perform hands-on structural safety inspections for various transportation agencies. Youโ€™ll also assist in planning and executing inspection programs, coordinating access logistics, and preparing detailed inspection documentation. This role offers a mix of office and fieldwork, with occasional night work and overnight travel assignments.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform routine and fracture-critical bridge and structural safety inspections in accordance with FHWA, state, and agency standards.
  • Assist in developing inspection schedules and coordinating with clients and stakeholders to meet project requirements.
  • Arrange access equipment (lifts, snoopers, boats, climbing gear) and traffic control setups to ensure safe inspection practices.
  • Assist in securing necessary permits, including railroad and agency access, in advance of inspections.
  • Collect, document, and evaluate field data; prepare comprehensive inspection reports with findings, photos, and recommendations.
  • Identify deficiencies, deterioration, or structural concerns and communicate findings promptly to project managers and clients.
  • Support project managers in estimating inspection hours, preparing proposals, and meeting project deadlines.
  • Adhere to all company and agency safety standards, including the use of PPE and fall protection equipment.
  • Work closely with team members and engineers to develop solutions for repair, rehabilitation, or replacement needs.
  • Participate in occasional night work or overnight travel assignments as required by project scope.

What Youโ€™ll Bring

  • Bachelorโ€™s Degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or related field; equivalent relevant experience may be considered.
  • Engineer-In-Training (EIT) Preferred.
  • NHI certifications for the inspection of bridges, culverts, highway structures, NSTMโ€™s, and tunnels preferred.
  • A minimum of 2 years bridge inspection experience required; familiarity with NBIS standards is a plus.
  • Physical ability to work in demanding field environments (heights, confined spaces, outdoor conditions).
  • Strong attention to detail with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills to meet tight deadlines.
  • Willingness and ability to travel overnight as needed.
  • Strong experience with Microsoft Office products preferred.
  • Experience utilizing web-based software for asset management information input and report generation preferred.

Why PRIME AE:

We donโ€™t just fill positions; we invest in people.

At PRIME AE, youโ€™ll find a supportive, flexible environment where careers are built intentionally, not accidentally. Youโ€™ll work on projects that improve everyday life, alongside colleagues who challenge and respect one another.

What sets us apart:

  • Career Growth: Flexible career paths across disciplines, from technical expertise to project and people leadership.
  • People-First Culture: We value trust, integrity, and collaboration, and we mean it.
  • Meaningful Work: Projects that strengthen communities, infrastructure, and public spaces.
  • Growth with Purpose: Strategic expansion backed by strong leadership and investment.
  • National Reach, Local Feel: Big-firm resources with the agility and relationships of local offices.

Our Commitment:

PRIME AE Group is committed to creating an inclusive environment where differences are respected, voices are heard, and everyone has the opportunity to succeed.
