Part-Time Audio Engineer

The part-time audio engineer performs live sound engineering and audio production duties to support WABE’s radio and podcast programming, live events, and digital media publications. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: operating the sound board for live radio programs, mixing short-form and long-form audio pieces for broadcast and digital, setting up and operating studio equipment for client bookings, and assisting with setup and production for live events.

This is a position requiring excellent skills in multitasking, organization, attention to detail and time management related to Radio Operations. The engineer must be able to assess and solve problems, implement new systems and procedures as needed, and work in cooperation with others.

This position will be expected to work a set schedule of 15 hours/week, however additional hours may be required as needed, which may occasionally include evenings and weekends. This position will work under the supervision of the Operations Director.

Accountabilities:

  • Operate the sound board and audio playout software to support the broadcast of live radio programming – including taking direction from the host and producer(s), connecting to remote guests, playing sound cuts as scheduled during the program, and ensuring standards for audio quality and program time cues are maintained.
  • Assist the Operations Director with the setup, operation and monitoring of the radio station’s automation (ENCO), responding to and correcting problems when they occur and anticipating problems before they occur.
  • Communicate with staff and internal stakeholders on any technical, operations and production related matters.
  • Work closely with programming and operations staff to update programs and other changes to the automation system (ENCO) as the need arises.
  • Assist with production and mixing of pre-recorded audio content for broadcast, podcast, or other digital publication.
  • Assist the Operations Director in overseeing the insertion of daily and weekly programs and promos into the automation system.
  • Assist with the setup and production of live in-person events at WABE’s studios or an off-site venue.
  • Other technical, operations, and production duties and responsibilities as needed.


Knowledge and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Sound Design/Engineering or a related field from an accredited college or university. or equivalent experience in the field of radio operations, engineering, or technical production.
  • Demonstrated ability to set priorities on a daily basis, follow through in accomplishing a varied series of tasks in a systematic manner, take direction and solve problems.
  • Computer skills a must – knowledge of multiple applications necessary. Demonstrated experience working with a digital audio workstation such as Adobe Audition, Audacity, Pro Tools or equivalent required.


Desired Attributes and Traits:

Technical experience necessary in broadcast equipment use, as well as production, board operation and studio and remote interview set-up.

Ability to work in cooperation with others and adapt to a changing work environment.
