DESCRIPTION:

The Connection/News-Herald/Loudon County Magazine a division of Loudon County Publishers Inc. is looking for a dynamic, career-oriented General Assignment Reporter/Staff Writer to join our award-winning News Team.

Loudon County is located only a few miles from the Great Smoky Mountains and just outside Knoxville, Tenn. the home of the University of Tennessee Volunteers. Long known as "the Lakeway to the Smokies," Loudon County's lakes and rivers provide a unique outdoor experience including fishing, boating, golfing, hiking, camping and more.

This position provides daily news coverage of the county and its surrounding areas, including local businesses and constantly evolving economic developments. The ideal candidate will have a background or strong interest in covering local politics and a willingness to pitch in and cover stories from other beats as needed.

The ideal candidate will have a hunger to tell large-scale stories that include visual and digital components, as well as personal stories that touch the hearts and lives of others.

JOB FUNCTIONS:

We are looking for someone who is a flexible self-starting multi-tasker attentive to details, diplomatic and able to perform under the day-to-day pressure of a deadline.

The ideal candidate will be a strong writer who demonstrates exceptional interviewing and organizational skills and who exhibits a tenacity and a genuine curiosity for reporting community news.

This is a full-time position with weeknight and weekend assignments part of the job. The ideal candidate must be able to accept instruction and editing suggestions from editors.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS, REQUIREMENTS:

Perform job duties and conduct self in accordance with the company's core values;

Take effective notes and be able to draft an organized news article from those notes;

Initiate and nurture effective, professional relationships with sources in the community;

Strong eye for details;

Must have own transportation.

PREFERRED, BUT NOT REQUIRED:

Experience writing enterprise and long-form content, as well as telling personal stories;

Experience covering news on social media platforms;

Some experience with photography, video and/or design.

TECHNOLOGY SKILLS

Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Word is required. Familiarity with AP style is strongly preferred. Photography, social media and content management system experience is a plus.

EDUCATION:

Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience preferred.
