What does an asset management engineer do?
An Asset Management Engineer is responsible for optimizing the performance, reliability, and lifecycle of an organization's assets, such as equipment, facilities, or infrastructure. They analyze data, develop maintenance strategies, and implement asset management plans to ensure efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Their role often involves coordinating with maintenance teams, using asset management software, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. By proactively managing assets, they help minimize downtime, reduce costs, and extend asset longevity.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an asset management engineer?
To thrive as an Asset Management Engineer, you need a strong background in engineering principles, data analysis, and asset lifecycle management, typically backed by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with asset management software (like IBM Maximo or SAP EAM), and certifications such as ISO 55001 or Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE) are often advantageous. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and project management skills help you excel in collaborating with cross-functional teams and stakeholders. These skills ensure effective optimization and maintenance of critical assets, resulting in improved operational efficiency and reduced costs.
What are some typical challenges faced by asset management engineers in their daily work?
Asset Management Engineers often face challenges such as balancing the long-term reliability of assets with day-to-day operational demands and budget constraints. They need to prioritize maintenance activities, manage data quality, and implement process improvements while collaborating with multiple departments. Staying updated with emerging technologies and aligning asset management strategies with organizational goals can also be demanding. However, these challenges provide valuable opportunities for professional growth, creative problem-solving, and making a significant impact on an organization's overall performance.

About the Opportunity
The Asset Performance Management Engineer is responsible for monitoring, evaluating, and improving the health, performance, reliability, and risk profile of transmission and distribution assets through data-driven analysis, engineering assessments, and risk-based decision-making. This role supports the development and execution of asset management strategies by analyzing asset condition and operational data, conducting risk and contingency assessments, investigating equipment failures, and identifying opportunities to enhance asset reliability and fleet performance.
The position plays a key role in facilitating asset risk reviews, developing mitigation strategies, supporting contingency planning, and providing technical recommendations that inform operational, maintenance, capital investment, and asset replacement decisions. The Asset Management Engineer also supports the implementation and continuous improvement of Asset Performance Management (APM) system, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of asset data, advancing asset health methodologies, and enhancing analytical tools, dashboards, and reporting capabilities.
Working collaboratively with Substation Operations, Engineering, Transmission & Substation Services (TSS), Information Technology (IT), Asset Performance Monitoring, and external partners, the Asset Management Engineer applies industry standards, emerging technologies, and best practices to continuously improve asset management processes, reduce risk, and support the safe, reliable, and cost-effective operation of the electric system.
Asset Health, Risk Management, and Contingency Planning
- Monitor, evaluate, and assess the condition, performance, reliability, and overall health of transmission and distribution assets, including power transformers, circuit breakers, capacitor banks, and other substation equipment.
- Provide fleet-level analysis and interpretation of asset condition, diagnostic, maintenance, operational, and reliability data-including Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA), oil quality test results, inspection findings, maintenance records, and online monitoring data-leveraging information from multiple systems and platforms such as APM, Cascade, TOA, PI Vision, and other asset monitoring and data management applications.
- Develop and maintain criticality indices for the various asset types that depict the importance of each asset such that better risk-based decision making can be completed.
- Assess the availability, readiness, and effectiveness of contingency solutions, including mobile transformers, spare transformers, system reconfiguration options, and emergency restoration strategies.
- Lead or support asset risk review meetings with operating companies and cross-functional stakeholders to evaluate asset health, assess risk exposure, review contingency options, and develop mitigation plans for critical assets and assets requiring ongoing monitoring and follow-up.
- Document, maintain, and track mitigation actions within asset management systems and collaborate with Substation Operations, Engineering, TSS, and other stakeholders to ensure timely execution and closure of risk reduction initiatives.
- Follow established asset management processes and frameworks while actively contributing to their continuous improvement through enhancements to asset health assessment methodologies, risk evaluation models, risk review practices, leveraging lessons learned, emerging technologies, industry best practices, and stakeholder feedback.
- Maintain the accuracy, integrity, and quality of asset data within APM and related systems, ensuring equipment, condition, maintenance, and risk information is complete, validated, and properly synchronized across interfacing enterprise applications.
- Develop and maintain expertise in APM functional designs, data models, asset health methodologies, system configurations, and data interfaces to support asset evaluation, data governance, and asset management decision-making.
- Support the implementation, administration, enhancement, and continuous improvement of APM platform through participation in system testing, data validation, functional design reviews, configuration assessments, and business requirement evaluations.
- Collaborate with IT, business stakeholders, and external vendors to improve APM functionality, data quality, system integration, analytics, reporting capabilities, and user experience.
- Contribute to the development and enhancement of asset performance dashboards, reports, visualizations, and analytical tools that support asset health assessments, risk reviews, investment planning, and executive reporting.
- Apply industry standards, regulatory requirements, and engineering best practices, including IEEE, EPRI, NERC, and company asset management and engineering standards, to support asset evaluation, reliability improvement, and risk management activities.
- Participate in industry working groups, user groups, conferences, workshops, and training opportunities such as NATF, EPRI, and other relevant industry forums to share knowledge and adopt leading practices.
