Asset Configuration Manager information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an asset configuration manager?

To thrive as an Asset Configuration Manager, you need a solid understanding of IT asset management, configuration management principles, and a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with configuration management databases (CMDBs), ITIL certification, and proficiency in asset tracking tools are typically important. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and excellent communication skills help in managing assets and collaborating across teams. These abilities ensure accurate asset records, compliance, and efficient change management within an organization.

What is an asset configuration manager?

An Asset Configuration Manager is responsible for overseeing and maintaining an organization’s asset and configuration management processes. This role involves tracking, managing, and updating information about hardware, software, and other IT assets throughout their lifecycle. Asset Configuration Managers ensure data accuracy in configuration management databases (CMDBs), support compliance efforts, and help optimize the use and cost of IT resources. They also collaborate with other IT and business teams to align asset management practices with organizational goals.

What is the difference between Asset Configuration Manager vs Asset Inventory Specialist?

The Asset Configuration Manager focuses on maintaining accurate configuration data and managing asset relationships within IT systems, while the Asset Inventory Specialist primarily handles physical asset tracking and record updates. Both roles are essential for effective asset management but differ in scope and technical complexity.

What are some common challenges asset configuration managers face when maintaining accurate asset records?

Asset Configuration Managers often encounter challenges such as integrating data from multiple sources, ensuring all asset changes are properly documented, and keeping records up-to-date amid frequent updates or system changes. Inaccurate or incomplete data can lead to compliance issues and inefficiencies in resource allocation. Collaborating closely with IT, procurement, and operations teams is essential to maintain data integrity and streamline the asset lifecycle management process.

As the IT Asset & Configuration Manager you will establish, lead and mature our IT Asset Management and Configuration Management capabilities, ensuring the organisation has the governance, controls and insight required to maximise the value of its technology investments while meeting regulatory and audit obligations.

This is a pivotal role that will take ownership of the full lifecycle management of hardware and software assets across the organisation. You will be responsible for developing the strategy, policies, standards and governance frameworks that underpin effective asset management, ensuring asset records are accurate, software licensing remains compliant and opportunities for cost optimisation are continually identified and realised.

Leading a team of Software and Hardware Asset Analysts, you will embed best practice asset management disciplines, creating a culture of accountability, accuracy and continuous improvement. You will work closely with colleagues across Service Desk, Engineering, Security, Procurement and Technology teams to ensure asset and configuration processes are fully integrated into operational activities, including joiners, movers and leavers, deployments, changes and service transitions.

A key part of the role will involve providing leadership insight and reporting on asset compliance, governance, financial optimisation and operational risk. You will also act as the organisation's subject matter expert for software licensing, vendor audits and ITAM best practice, ensuring the technology estate remains compliant, cost-effective and well governed.

About You

You are an experienced IT Asset Management professional with a strong track record of leading and developing ITAM, Software Asset Management (SAM) or Hardware Asset Management (HAM) capabilities within a medium to large organisation. You understand the importance of asset intelligence and configuration data in supporting technology governance, operational effectiveness and regulatory compliance.

You bring a deep understanding of asset lifecycle management and are comfortable overseeing everything from procurement and deployment through to licence management, financial optimisation and secure disposal. You have experience managing software licensing across major vendors, particularly Microsoft technologies such as Microsoft 365, Azure, Windows and SQL Server, and are confident interpreting licensing agreements, vendor contracts and audit requirements.

You have a strong appreciation of Configuration Management and understand how accurate CMDB data supports effective change management, incident response, problem management and operational resilience. You are passionate about creating practical, valuable configuration models that provide meaningful insight without introducing unnecessary complexity.
