Job description

The Estimator will be responsible for bidding jobs/projects for our asphalt construction business. This position will work closely with customers and internal departments for accurate cost estimating.  The ideal candidate must possess a thorough working knowledge of heavy civil construction, roadway construction, and VDOT and Municipality related construction. This position requires the candidate to be self-motivated and well organized. The ideal candidate must be willing to work in both the office and the field to gain a full understanding of the work that they are estimating.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform quantity take-offs, pricing, scoping and bidding of construction projects.
  • Visit project site to develop a thorough understanding of the site conditions.
  • Assess site risks and develop plans to mitigate.
  • Develop a clear understanding of the project specifications and bidding requirements.
    Compose and manage both verbal and written clarification correspondence with the client.
  • Responsible for gathering information related to asphalt, paving, and other materials needed to complete the project.
  • Identifying constructability issues through the estimating process.
  • Identifying value-engineering alternatives and other opportunities to gain a competitive
  • Prepare detailed proposals and bid packages for submission to clients.
  • Review estimates with project managers, superintendents and other estimators to ensure
    project costs are accurately captured in the estimate.
  • Prepare preliminary pre-bid schedules
  • Issue subcontractor award notices or letters of intent
  • Coordinate successful bid hand-offs to project management and job supervisory team
  • Complete all forms/paperwork required by VDOT/Municipal contracts
  • Assure compliance with MBE/DBE and/or SWAM requirements of contract in bid process.
  • Assure all appropriate subcontractors have been solicited.
  • Work with various internal team members for project setup and project completion
  • Coordinate project billing based on contract specs
  • Communicate with project management throughout life of project to track estimated versus actual costs
  • Study ongoing and historical job performance to assist with accurate pricing in the future

REQUIREMENTS:  

  • Must be able to communicate effectively and professionally with owners, general contractors, subcontractors, and other members of the Adams team
  • Must be able to multi-task and problem solve
  • Must have strong individual work ethic and desire to continue learning
  • Strong organizational skills are required
  • ability to track and meet all deadlines related to bids and project submittal requirements.
  • Must be able to maintain customer relationships in a positive manner.
  • Must have strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well with project managers and crew superintendents.
  • Must demonstrate analytical and systematic thinking.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School/GED required; College degree is preferred.
  • 5+ years estimating and highway construction experience is strongly preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills are required; the ability to track and meet all deadlines related to bids and project submittal requirements.
  • Knowledge of working with contracts/VDOT is preferred.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record is required.
