What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an ASIC Engineer Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an ASIC Engineer Intern, you need a solid understanding of digital logic design, Verilog or VHDL programming, and coursework in electrical or computer engineering. Familiarity with industry-standard tools such as Cadence, Synopsys, or ModelSim, as well as basic simulation and synthesis flows, is typically expected. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective teamwork skills set candidates apart in this role. These competencies are vital for creating reliable, efficient integrated circuits and for collaborating successfully within engineering teams.

What types of projects and tasks can I expect to work on as an ASIC Engineer Intern?

As an ASIC Engineer Intern, you can expect to be involved in a variety of tasks such as assisting with RTL design, verification, and simulation, as well as supporting the synthesis and timing analysis of integrated circuits. You may also work on debugging hardware issues, writing testbenches, and collaborating with senior engineers during design reviews. Interns often gain exposure to industry-standard tools and workflows, making it a valuable learning experience for those interested in a career in hardware design.

What does an ASIC Engineer Intern do?

An ASIC Engineer Intern assists in the design, development, and testing of Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs), which are specialized chips tailored for specific applications. Interns typically work under the supervision of experienced engineers, performing tasks such as schematic design, circuit simulation, verification, and debugging. They may also collaborate with software and hardware teams to ensure the ASIC functions correctly within larger systems. This role provides practical, hands-on experience and insight into the semiconductor industry.

What is the difference between Asic Engineer Intern vs Digital Design Intern?

AspectAsic Engineer InternDigital Design Intern
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing or holding a degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer EngineeringSimilar educational background, often in Electrical or Computer Engineering
Work EnvironmentDesign teams focused on ASIC development, hardware labs, CAD toolsDigital circuit design, simulation, and verification environments
Employer & Industry UsageSemiconductor companies, chip design firms, tech corporationsElectronics manufacturers, semiconductor firms, research labs

Both roles are internship positions in the semiconductor industry, focusing on different aspects of chip design. An Asic Engineer Intern typically works on ASIC architecture and design, while a Digital Design Intern concentrates on digital circuit implementation and testing. Both internships provide valuable experience in hardware design and are often sought by students pursuing careers in integrated circuit development.

Job description

Overview
Research Internships at Microsoft provide a dynamic environment for research careers with a network of world-class research labs led by globally-recognized scientists and engineers, who pursue innovation in a range of scientific and technical disciplines to help solve complex challenges in diverse fields, including computing, healthcare, economics, and the environment.
As a Research Intern in the Strategic Planning and Architecture (SPARC) group, you will contribute to the research, design, and development of network transport features and telemetry systems for large scale data center and AI networking environments. This role encompasses topics such as congestion control, load balancing, multipath transport, network reliability, and telemetry, with a focus on a specific subset of these areas relevant to the internship. You will have the opportunity to prototype these solutions on real networking hardware and may utilize simulation or emulation tools to guide design. The role includes collaboration with researchers and engineers across Microsoft and offers the possibility for real system impact.
Applicants should demonstrate depth of knowledge in networking and systems, as well as experience in low-level programming, experimentation, and modeling. Experience in software and hardware network programming is a plus, as it will aid in developing and prototyping networking solutions.
Responsibilities
Research Interns put inquiry and theory into practice. Alongside fellow doctoral candidates and some of the world's best researchers, Research Interns learn, collaborate, and network for life. Research Interns not only advance their own careers, but they also contribute to exciting research and development strides. During the 12-week internship, Research Interns are paired with mentors and expected to collaborate with other Research Interns and researchers, present findings, and contribute to the vibrant life of the community. Research internships are available in all areas of research, and are offered year-round, though they typically begin in the summer.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Engage early with their mentors to clearly formulate a plan of work for the 12 weeks of the Research Internship.
  • Clearly and frequently document and communicate their progress, adjusting the plan as the project evolves.
  • Show initiative and think unconventionally to derive creative and innovative solutions.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled in a PhD program in Computer Science or a related STEM field.

Other Requirements
  • Research Interns are expected to be physically located in their manager's Microsoft worksite location for the duration of their internship.
  • In addition to the qualifications below, you'll need to submit a minimum of two reference letters for this position as well as a cover letter and any relevant work or research samples. After you submit your application, a request for letters may be sent to your list of references on your behalf. Note that reference letters cannot be requested until after you have submitted your application, and furthermore, that they might not be automatically requested for all candidates. You may wish to alert your letter writers in advance, so they will be ready to submit your letter.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Background in computer networking with a strong understanding of transport protocols, congestion control.
  • Familiarity with network simulation environments (e.g., NS3, OMNET++) or experience with hardware RTL development (Verilog/VHDL) and prototyping (FPGA / ASIC).
  • Experience building networked systems and programming networking hardware, e.g. NICs and/or switches in datacenters.

The base pay range for this internship is USD $6,710 - $13,270 per month. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $8,760 - $14,360 per month.
Certain roles may be eligible for benefits and other compensation. Find additional benefits and pay information here: https://careers.microsoft.com/us/en/us-intern-pay
Benefits/perks listed below may vary depending on the nature of your employment with Microsoft and the country where you work.
