What is the difference between Asic Design Manager vs Asic Design Engineer?

AspectAsic Design ManagerAsic Design Engineer
ResponsibilitiesOversees ASIC design projects, manages teams, and coordinates with stakeholdersPerforms ASIC design, coding, simulation, and verification tasks
Required SkillsLeadership, project management, ASIC design knowledgeHardware description languages, circuit design, verification skills
ExperienceTypically 8+ years in ASIC design, with leadership experienceUsually 2-5 years in ASIC design roles
Work EnvironmentDesign teams, project planning, cross-functional collaborationDesign labs, simulation environments, coding and testing

The main difference between an Asic Design Manager and an Asic Design Engineer lies in their roles. The manager oversees projects and teams, focusing on leadership and coordination, while the engineer concentrates on technical ASIC design and implementation. Both roles require ASIC design expertise, but the manager's role is more strategic and supervisory.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an ASIC Design Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an ASIC Design Manager, you need expertise in digital and analog ASIC design, project management experience, and typically a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with industry-standard EDA tools (such as Cadence or Synopsys), verification methodologies, and knowledge of relevant design flows is crucial. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills help manage teams and coordinate with cross-functional stakeholders. These competencies ensure high-quality chip designs are delivered on time and meet performance and cost targets, which is vital for organizational success.

What are some common challenges faced by an ASIC Design Manager in leading multidisciplinary teams?

ASIC Design Managers often navigate the complexities of coordinating multidisciplinary teams, including digital, analog, verification, and physical design engineers. One common challenge is ensuring clear communication across these specialties to maintain alignment on project goals, timelines, and technical requirements. Additionally, managing shifting priorities, resolving technical bottlenecks, and balancing resource allocation are frequent hurdles. Successful managers foster collaboration, set clear expectations, and leverage structured project management practices to keep teams productive and motivated.

What does an ASIC Design Manager do?

An ASIC Design Manager oversees the design and development of Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs), managing a team of engineers through the entire chip design process. They coordinate project timelines, ensure technical specifications are met, and facilitate communication between design, verification, and manufacturing teams. Their role also involves resource planning, risk management, and ensuring that the final product meets performance, cost, and quality targets.

Job description

At Atom Computing, we build quantum computers using arrays of optically trapped neutral atoms that will empower customers to achieve unprecedented computational breakthroughs. Join a world-class team of scientists, engineers, and business professionals to advance the state-of-the-art in quantum computing.ย

Atom Computing is seeking a Principal ASIC Designer to oversee the development of critical technologies that power our quantum computers. In this role, you will own end-to-end design strategy-from requirements definition through silicon bring-up-while driving critical trade-off decisions across performance, power, area, and system integration constraints. You will partner closely with customers and cross-functional teams to translate evolving requirements into production-ready designs, ensuring alignment between technical execution and business objectives. As a senior technical leader, you will provide strategic guidance to executive stakeholders, shaping the long-term silicon roadmap and influencing key investment decisions. This position requires deep expertise in ASIC development and strong systems thinking.ย

Due to the need for collaboration with Atom's theory, software, hardware and optics teams, this role is required to be in the office in Boulder, CO or Austin, TX at least 3 days per week.ย

Job Responsibilities
  • Establish ASIC design processes internal to Atom Computing by defining methodologies across architecture, RTL, verification, and tapeout.
  • Support hiring and mentoring a small team of ASIC engineers as required to implement the products.ย
  • Perform hands-on ASIC design including microarchitecture, RTL development, testing, and integration.
  • Manage schedules and vendor interfaces by coordinating milestones, aligning with ASIC partners, and ensuring successful fabrication.
  • Work closely with Atom Computing's quantum physicists, optical engineers, hardware and software engineers to understand use cases and deliver hardware that addresses the needs.ย
  • Manage the product roadmap and subsystem delivery schedules supporting both commercial and research projects.ย
  • Participate in the design and development of current FPGA designs. Influence the FPGA design and development process to prepare for ASIC design.
Experience & Education
  • MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering, or related field.
  • 10+ years of post-degree experience as a hardware engineer.ย
Qualifications
  • Have gone through 2 or more complete ASIC design cycles.
  • Experience porting designs from FPGA prototypes to ASICs
  • Proficiency with RTL (SystemVerilog preferred)
  • Experience in implementing large digital signal processing blocks in RTL
  • Working knowledge of performance and limitations of ASIC fabs, partners, and design nodes as well as FPGA capabilities to guide selection of best fit for our applications
  • Knowledge of Cadence, Synopsys, or Siemens EDA design tools
  • Expertise in FPGA, microprocessor, and related digital circuit design and functions
  • Mixed signal design experience

Atom Computing provides a wide variety of perks and benefits, including fully paid medical, dental, and vision insurance for our employees and their dependents. Additionally, unlimited paid time off, 401K company matching, short- and long-term disability, FSA, dependent care benefits, and life insurance.ย  We also offer drinks, snacks, and catered team lunches in our offices, every day!

The base salary range for this position is between $180,000 - $220,000, commensurate with experience. In addition to salary, we offer an annual bonus and equity in the company.

We may use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support parts of the hiring process, such as reviewing applications, analyzing resumes, or assessing responses and identifying potential inconsistencies or verification signals in application materials based on available information. These tools assist our recruitment team but do not replace human judgment. Final hiring decisions are ultimately made by humans.
