What is artist marketing?

Artist marketing involves promoting and building the public image and audience of creative individuals such as musicians, visual artists, or performers. This can include developing promotional strategies, managing social media presence, organizing events, and collaborating with brands or media outlets. The goal is to increase an artist's visibility, grow their fan base, and maximize opportunities for revenue through sales, streaming, or live performances.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an artist marketing professional?

To thrive as an Artist Marketing professional, you need a deep understanding of branding, music industry trends, and marketing strategies, often supported by a degree in marketing or communications. Familiarity with digital marketing platforms, social media analytics tools, and customer relationship management (CRM) systems is typically required. Creativity, strong communication, and relationship-building skills help you stand out by effectively promoting artists and engaging diverse audiences. These skills are crucial for building artists’ fanbases, maximizing exposure, and driving commercial success in a competitive industry.

What are some common challenges faced in artist marketing roles, and how can I prepare for them?

In artist marketing, one of the main challenges is balancing the creative vision of the artist with effective promotional strategies that resonate with target audiences. You may also encounter fast-paced deadlines, last-minute changes, and the need to manage multiple campaigns simultaneously. To prepare, it's helpful to develop strong project management skills, stay informed about digital marketing trends, and build effective communication skills to collaborate with both artists and other industry professionals. Being adaptable and proactive in problem-solving will help you navigate these challenges successfully.

Job description

About Capacity:

We believe the arts are essential to a thriving society, and to the strength and vibrancy of every community. Capacity is the premier digital marketing consulting firm for arts and culture. Since 2008, we've worked with ambitious arts and cultural organizations to engage audiences, build community, and market smarter through close, personal partnerships. Our clients are our passion as much as our industry - we stand up for the organizations and people we serve and are committed to consulting each courageously. Each year, we also produce Boot Camp, the country's leading digital marketing conference for the arts.

Lead high-impact projects: custom consulting engagements, marketing audits, new business proposals

Build the kind of trust that makes you indispensable to your clients

Lead a small team of Analysts and Senior Analysts.

Beyond your portfolio, you'll help shape where Capacity goes next, leading internal initiatives, mentoring colleagues, and building your voice in the industry through case studies, speaking engagements, and Boot Camp, our annual conference for arts marketers.

Qualifications

Consultants are holistic arts marketers. We're most excited about candidates who bring:

4-6 years of experience in the field, including experience managing others.

A demonstrated ability to manage ambiguity and navigate complex, evolving client situations with clarity and confidence

Strong conflict management skills and sound judgment in balancing client and internal priorities

A track record of driving innovation and identifying new opportunities for client growth

Comfort operating around senior leadership, both internally and with client stakeholders

Clear career ambition and a demonstrated interest in growing as a strategic advisor and consultant

Compensation:

The starting salary for this position is $74,750, plus potential bonus based on company performance.

Benefits

Beyond joining a team of curious, creative people who care deeply about the future of the arts, you'll enjoy a benefits package designed to support your well-being, growth, and work-life balance, including:

Time Off & Flexibility

Four weeks of paid vacation plus at least 14 paid holidays

A flexible holiday swap so you can honor the days that matter most to you

Minimum of 6 weeks fully paid, gender-neutral parental leave
