Job Title: Instructor of Art

Hiring Salary Range: $43, 731 - $52, 479

Institution: Walters State Community College - Morristown (Employees are assigned to a "home" location but may occasionally or regularly be required to work at other WSCC locations.)

Job Purpose: The overall purpose of the Instructor of Art is to provide instruction in Studio Art, Design, Art History, and Introduction to Art courses. Providing services primarily on the Walters State Morristown campus and satellite campuses as needed.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Teach Introduction to Art and Art History courses (conventional, hybrid, online, or dual enrollment at area high schools as needed) 
  • Teach studio art courses to fulfill departmental and curricular needs.
  • Prepare course syllabi, course materials, evaluate student learning and maintain class records. 
  • Participate in curriculum development, student recruiting and advising, student club activities, departmental and divisional meetings and college committees.
  • Maintain studio equipment and inventory of supplies for assigned studios. 
  • Coordinate exhibitions, artist talks, and occasional receptions in the WSCC Catron Art Gallery. 
  • Complete all duties outlined in Guidelines for Faculty WSCC Policy 06:01:01. 
  • May perform other related duties as required. 

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree (M.F.A.) with a minimum of 18 credit hours in Studio Art, Graphic Design, Art History or equivalent from an accredited institution.
  • Must submit a pdf or link to a portfolio consisting of 10-20 images of current work to the application for consideration.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach Introduction to Art and studio art courses. (Must provide a pdf or link to a portfolio consisting of 10-20 images of student work.)
  • Experience in teaching in a variety of modalities: conventional, hybrid, online, DVC
  • Evidence of demonstrated commitment to and understanding of the comprehensive community college philosophy.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Three or more years related teaching experience.
  • Experience teaching foundations level courses.
  • Experience teaching a variety of media, such as painting, sculpture, photography, or design.

Behavioral Core Competencies:

  • Teaching competence in assigned Studio Art, Introduction to Art, and Art History and applicable tools, materials, and technologies with the ability to communicate effectively and to interact with campus and community positively to develop a cohesive program.
  • Empowers and motivates students to learn effectively.
  • Strong leadership and motivational skills are essential.
  • Attends all faculty meetings, college assemblies, professional development and orientation activities, and other meetings as called by the President, Dean or Department Chair.
  • Keeps abreast of developments in the field by reading current literature, talking with colleagues, and participating in professional conferences.
  • Participates in departmental and college committees; and provides outreach service to the community.
  • Works effectively with other faculty and administrators within the department, the division, and the college to provide well-developed courses and programs of study.
  • Is a team player and contributes to the department and the division with new ideas and approaches, and uses professional development opportunities to expand instructional vision.

Leadership & Supervisory: This position has no supervisory responsibilities, but is expected to participate as part of a team in conjunction with other faculty and as a member of the Humanities division.

Environment & Working Conditions: Office environment is temperature controlled with occasional fluctuations, well lit, and free from loud noises and unnecessary interruptions. Could be exposed to varying weather conditions when travelling.

Physical Demands (including requirements for travel or working nights/weekends/holidays):

  • Large amounts of time spent looking at computer monitors could lead to some eye strain, stress, or headache issues.
  • Operation of standard office equipment including copier and fax machine.
  • Repetitive stress injuries could occur.
  • Travel to local areas may be required.
