What is an area leader?

Area Leaders are professionals responsible for overseeing operations, teams, or branches within a designated geographic area or business unit. Their main duties include managing staff, ensuring company standards are met, implementing policies, and driving performance to achieve organizational goals. Area Leaders often serve as the link between upper management and local teams, providing guidance, support, and strategic direction. They are essential in maintaining consistent service quality and operational efficiency across multiple locations.

How does an area leader typically collaborate with teams across different locations, and what strategies help ensure consistent performance?

As an Area Leader, you'll often oversee multiple teams across various locations, requiring frequent communication and coordination to ensure alignment with company goals. Regular site visits, virtual meetings, and standardized reporting are common strategies for maintaining consistency and addressing challenges promptly. Building strong relationships with local managers and fostering an open feedback culture also helps in identifying issues early and sharing best practices across teams. Successful Area Leaders balance hands-on support with empowering local leaders to drive performance and innovation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an area leader, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Area Leader, you need strong leadership, organizational, and operational management skills, often supported by a degree in business or a related field. Familiarity with workforce management software, budgeting tools, and performance tracking systems is typically required. Exceptional communication, conflict resolution, and motivational skills help drive team performance and foster a positive work environment. These skills ensure the effective oversight of multiple locations or teams, consistent achievement of business goals, and sustainable growth.

Job description

Overview

The Commercial Sales Area Leader is a home-based position based in Charlotte, NC, or Atlanta, GA, responsible for driving Lutron’s commercial sales growth throughout the Southeast region. In this role, you will lead and develop Lutron’s network of manufacturer representative agencies, partnering with agency principals and sales teams to drive growth, strengthen channel relationships, and execute commercial sales strategies.

You will influence key stakeholders across the commercial construction ecosystem, including architects, engineers, lighting designers, consultants, contractors, distributors, and end users. By building demand with specifiers and positioning Lutron as the preferred choice for intelligent lighting, shading, and control solutions, you will expand market share and increase specification opportunities throughout the region.

This highly visible individual contributor role requires commercial sales leadership, relationship management, technical aptitude, and the ability to influence others without direct authority. You will collaborate with manufacturer representatives, distributors, and internal partners to identify growth opportunities, execute go-to-market strategies, support new product introductions, and shape project outcomes. Through effective channel leadership and consultative selling, you will drive long-term growth while reinforcing Lutron's leadership position within the commercial market.

This is a home-based position requiring travel throughout North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, and Florida. Candidates must reside in either the Atlanta metro area or the Charlotte metro area.

  • Partner with business units to support pilots and provide market insights.
  • Ensure manufacturer representatives execute commercial strategies and regional priorities.
  • Collaborate with agency principals to strengthen teams and drive performance.
  • Influence commercial project stakeholders to increase solution specification and adoption.
  • Develop territory plans, manage pipeline activity, and execute growth strategies.

Qualifications
