What is an architecture graduate?

An Architecture Graduate job is an entry-level position for individuals who have recently completed a degree in architecture. These roles typically involve assisting senior architects with design development, drafting, research, and project documentation. Graduates gain hands-on experience working on real projects while developing technical skills and industry knowledge. They often work towards professional registration by completing required training and exams.

What kinds of projects and responsibilities can I expect as an architecture graduate in my first role?

As an Architecture Graduate, you can expect to assist with a range of tasks, including preparing drawings and presentations, conducting site visits, researching building codes, and supporting project documentation. You'll often work closely with experienced architects and multidisciplinary teams, gaining valuable exposure to different project phases. Many firms encourage graduates to take on increasing responsibility as they gain experience, which can help build a strong foundation for eventual licensure. This role typically offers a supportive learning environment, with mentorship and opportunities to participate in diverse architectural projects. Be prepared for a mix of creative and technical tasks, along with collaboration and feedback from team members.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an architecture graduate, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Architecture Graduate, you need a solid understanding of architectural design principles, drafting, and building codes, typically supported by a bachelor's or master's degree in architecture. Familiarity with software such as AutoCAD, Revit, SketchUp, and Adobe Creative Suite is essential for creating and presenting design concepts. Strong communication, teamwork, and time management skills help you collaborate effectively and meet project deadlines. These abilities enable Architecture Graduates to contribute meaningfully in professional settings and prepare for eventual licensure.

Is a master's in architecture worth it?

For architecture graduates, a master's degree can enhance technical skills, expand career opportunities, and meet licensing requirements in many regions. However, it involves additional time and cost, so its value depends on individual career goals and the specific demands of the architecture profession.

What jobs does an architecture graduate get you?

An architecture graduate can pursue roles such as architectural designer, draftsperson, urban planner, or project coordinator. These positions often require knowledge of design software like AutoCAD or Revit and may involve working in architectural firms, construction companies, or government agencies.

With over 3,000 employees throughout the Americas, Asia, and Europe, the firm provides support on projects of varying size and complexity. Job Summary
At TYLin, we believe great architecture has the power to improve lives. We are seeking a talented and motivated Architectural Designer who is passionate about design, public infrastructure, and the role architecture plays in creating more accessible, sustainable, and connected communities.
This is an exciting opportunity for a recent Architecture graduate to begin your professional career working alongside experienced architects, engineers, planners, and transportation professionals on some of the most significant infrastructure projects in New York and beyond.
You'll contribute to the design of transit stations, maintenance facilities, operations buildings, and other public infrastructure, gaining hands-on experience while developing your architectural, technical, and project delivery skills. If you are curious, creative, collaborative, and excited by the opportunity to see your designs become part of the built environment, we want to hear from you.
Responsibilities & Qualifications
What You'll Do
  • Support the planning, design, and documentation of rail, transit, and other public infrastructure projects.
  • Assist with the development of architectural concepts, plans, elevations, sections, details, and presentation materials.
  • Work with senior architects and multidisciplinary project teams to develop integrated design solutions.
  • Contribute to projects through multiple phases of delivery, from early concepts and schematic design through construction documentation and construction administration.
  • Develop and maintain architectural models and drawings using Revit and AutoCAD.
  • Assist with coordination between architectural, structural, civil, mechanical, electrical, and other engineering disciplines.
  • Research and apply applicable building codes, accessibility requirements, design standards, and client criteria under the guidance of experienced professionals.
  • Participate in design reviews, project meetings, site visits, and coordination sessions.
  • Prepare presentations, diagrams, renderings, and other materials to communicate design concepts.
  • Support the preparation of technical documents, specifications, and construction documentation.
  • Learn from experienced architects and engineers while developing your understanding of architectural practice, building systems, and transportation infrastructure.
  • Bring fresh ideas and creative thinking to projects that have a meaningful impact on the communities they serve.

What You'll Bring
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Architecture from an accredited architecture program.
  • 0-2 years of professional experience, including internships, co-op placements, or relevant academic project experience.
  • A strong interest in architecture, public infrastructure, transportation, and the built environment.
  • A portfolio demonstrating your design thinking, creativity, technical skills, and ability to communicate architectural ideas.
  • Basic to intermediate proficiency in Revit and AutoCAD.
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, Rhino, SketchUp, or other design and visualization software is an asset.
  • An understanding of fundamental architectural principles, building systems, construction documentation, and design development.
  • Strong visual, verbal, written, and graphic communication skills.
  • A willingness to learn new software, processes, and technical skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Curiosity, initiative, and a genuine desire to grow as an architect.
  • Interest in pursuing professional licensure and developing toward AIA/RA registration.

Experience That Would Be Beneficial
You do not need previous transportation experience to be successful in this role. We are particularly interested in candidates who can demonstrate:
  • Academic or internship experience involving transportation, civic, institutional, commercial, or other complex building projects.
  • An interest in rail, transit, aviation, or other public infrastructure.
  • Experience developing architectural models and drawings in Revit.
  • Experience with visualization, rendering, parametric design, or digital fabrication.
  • Coursework or project experience focused on sustainable, resilient, or accessible design.
  • LEED knowledge or an interest in sustainable design.
  • Internship or co-op experience within an architecture, engineering, construction, or multidisciplinary design environment.
