What does an architect construction administration do?
An Architect in Construction Administration oversees the construction phase of a project to ensure it aligns with design intent, building codes, and contract documents. They collaborate with contractors, review submittals, respond to RFIs, and conduct site visits to monitor progress. Their role helps ensure quality control, cost management, and timely project completion while resolving any design or technical issues that arise.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in architect construction administration?
To excel as an Architect Construction Administration, you need a solid background in architectural design, construction documentation, and understanding of building codes and regulations, usually supported by a professional architecture degree and licensure. Familiarity with project management software (such as Procore or Autodesk Revit), contract administration, and LEED certification are commonly required technical competencies. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication with contractors, clients, and design teams are essential soft skills. These qualifications ensure that construction projects proceed smoothly, adhere to design intent, and meet regulatory standards while minimizing delays and conflicts.
What are the main challenges an architect construction administration professional typically faces on the job?
Architects working in Construction Administration frequently manage the complex coordination between design intent and real-world construction conditions, which can include handling unexpected on-site issues, resolving construction conflicts, and adapting to project changes. Balancing client expectations, contractor requests, and compliance with building codes also requires strong negotiation and problem-solving skills. The fast-paced environment often demands quick yet accurate decision-making to keep projects on schedule and within budget. However, these challenges foster professional growth and offer the opportunity to play a pivotal role in bringing architectural designs to life.

- Client Site Visits: Accompany clients on site visits as appropriate, providing context, guidance, and reassurance throughout the construction process.
- Change Order Communication: Clearly communicate scope changes, potential cost implications, and schedule impacts to clients, ensuring informed decision-making and documented approvals before proceeding.
Contractor Relations :
- Contractor Collaboration: Build and maintain productive working relationships with general contractors, subcontractors, and vendors while firmly upholding the design intent and client interests.
- Meeting Facilitation: Lead or actively participate in owner-architect-contractor (OAC) meetings, preparing agendas, documenting meeting minutes, and tracking action items to resolution.

- Responsible Documentation: Ensure all field conditions, decisions, and communications are documented professionally and accurately to protect the interests of client and firm
- Code & Regulator Compliance: Monitor for compliance with applicable building codes, permit conditions, and jurisdictional requirements within STRANG scope. Coordinate site visits and address concerns promptly.
