An Architect Internship is a temporary position that provides students or recent graduates with hands-on experience in architectural design, drafting, and project planning. Interns typically work under the supervision of licensed architects, assisting with tasks such as creating drawings, conducting research, and visiting project sites. This internship helps develop technical skills, knowledge of building codes, and proficiency in industry-standard software like AutoCAD and Revit.

What kind of projects and responsibilities can I expect as an architect intern?

As an Architect Intern, you will typically be involved in assisting with drafting construction documents, developing design concepts, and researching building materials and local codes. You may also support project managers by preparing presentations, participating in team meetings, and collaborating with engineers or other consultants. Many firms encourage interns to contribute ideas during design charrettes or critiquing sessions, helping you develop both technical and creative skills. These experiences are designed to provide valuable, hands-on exposure to real architectural projects and the collaborative process within a professional design team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the architect internship position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Architect Intern, you need foundational knowledge of architectural design principles, proficiency in drafting, and experience with building codes, often supported by progress toward a degree in architecture or a related field. Strong communication, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn are valuable soft skills for this position. These abilities are essential for successfully supporting project teams, contributing creative ideas, and ensuring quality and accuracy in design tasks.

WHO THIS POSITION IS BEST FOR

The ideal candidate wants meaningful project responsibility, values feedback and mentorship, and is interested in growing into a Job Captain, Project Architect, or project-management position.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Prepare and update Revit models under the direction of senior project staff.
  • Produce plans, elevations, sections, details, schedules, diagrams, and presentation materials.
  • Assist with design-development, permit, and construction-document packages.
  • Maintain project drawing sets, directories, consultant files, transmittals, meeting notes, and document-control records.
  • Incorporate redlines accurately and completely.

  • Support construction administration through RFIs, submittals, field reports, punch lists, and closeout documentation.
  • Participate in internal project meetings and selected client or consultant meetings.

  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative and deadline-driven environment.
  • Willingness to learn and accept constructive feedback.
  • Interest in pursuing architectural licensure.
  • Desire to grow into a Job Captain, Project Architect, or project-management role.
