What Is ArchiCAD?

ArchiCAD is a computer-aided design and building information modeling (BIM) software from a software company called Graphisoft. The software is suited for architecture and engineering projects. You can use it to draft 2D and 3D models, architectural renderings, and technical drawings. Architects, drafters, and engineers can utilize ArchiCAD to plan both the aesthetics and technical aspects of construction projects. ArchiCAD also has building information modeling capabilities which allow users to store data and structural information within the model. This additional data helps with the design and building process. Third-party developers have created add-ons that drafters can use with ArchiCAD.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Archicad Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Archicad Specialist, you need solid architectural knowledge, CAD proficiency, and experience with building information modeling (BIM), typically supported by a degree in architecture or a related field. Expertise in Archicad software, familiarity with 3D modeling tools, and relevant BIM certifications are highly valuable. Strong attention to detail, communication skills, and the ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams set outstanding candidates apart. These skills ensure efficient project delivery, high-quality design documentation, and seamless coordination throughout the architectural workflow.

How does an Archicad specialist typically collaborate with architects and other design team members during a project?

An Archicad specialist plays a vital role in facilitating collaboration among architects, engineers, and other design professionals by managing and sharing Building Information Modeling (BIM) data. They often coordinate model updates, ensure drawing consistency, and implement project standards across the team. Regular communication and collaboration sessions are common, as Archicad specialists help resolve design conflicts and integrate feedback efficiently. This collaborative workflow helps keep projects on schedule and ensures all team members are working with the latest information.

What is the difference between Archicad vs Revit?

Job description

Key Responsibilities:

1. Design & Development

  • Concept to Completion: Lead the projects' design process, creating compelling architectural concepts that balance aesthetic vision with functional and code requirements.
  • BIM Modeling: Develop and manage complex ArchiCAD models. You will be responsible for maintaining "model health," ensuring proper layering, classification, and attribute management.
  • Visual Communication: Produce high-quality drawings and 3D visualizations to communicate design intent for client presentations and municipal reviews.

2. Technical Documentation

  • Construction Documents (CDs): Translate design intent into comprehensive, buildable construction sets.
  • Detailing: Develop custom architectural details to meet technical, constructability and aesthetic goals.
  • Specifications: Coordinate drawing sets with written specifications to ensure material and assembly accuracy.

3. Coordination & Project Leadership

  • Interdisciplinary Coordination: Serve as the primary point of contact for MEP, structural, and civil engineers. Lead the BIM coordination process to detect and resolve system clashes early.
  • Project Standards: Maintain and enforce office ArchiCAD templates and BIM standards across the project team.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience: 5–8 years of experience in an architectural firm (Residential, Commercial, or Mixed-Use experience preferred).
  • ArchiCAD Mastery: Expert-level proficiency is non-negotiable. You should be comfortable with GDL objects, D5 rendering (or Twinmotion/Enscape integrations), and Teamwork environments.
  • Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of building codes (IBC/ADA), zoning bylaws, and sustainable design principles.
  • Project Management: Proven ability to manage multiple project deadlines simultaneously while maintaining high attention to detail.
  • Education: Professional degree in Architecture (B.Arch or M.Arch) from an accredited institution.
