A Day in the Life of a Small Engine Mechanic
As a Small Engine Mechanic, your day is spent diagnosing issues, performing repairs, completing preventative maintenance, and preparing equipment for customer use.
You may be working on riding mowers, zero-turn mowers, compact tractors, handheld equipment, or other lawn & garden and turf machines. One job may involve troubleshooting an engine issue or hydraulic system, while the next may focus on preventative maintenance, pre-delivery inspections, or assembling new equipment for customer delivery.
You'll work in a shop environment alongside a team of experienced technicians, using your skills and tools to keep equipment running safely and efficiently in addition to supporting the setup and preparation of equipment sold by the dealership.
Every day is different, but the goal is always the same: do the job right and take care of the customer.
What You'll Do
As a Small Engine Mechanic you will:
  • diagnose, repair, and maintain lawn, garden, and turf equipment
  • perform routine service and preventative maintenance on customer and dealer-owned equipment
  • troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues
  • use service manuals, tools, and diagnostic systems to complete repairs accurately
  • maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area
  • complete work orders, reports, and documentation accurately and on time
  • track time and materials used on each repair
  • participate in ongoing training to build your technical knowledge
  • perform pre-delivery inspections and equipment setup procedures
  • install attachments and Integrated Solutions (IS) products as needed
  • work closely with teammates to support shop productivity

  • 1+ years of experience performing service repairs on lawn & garden equipment or similar machinery
  • mechanical aptitude with knowledge of small engines and equipment systems
  • ability to perform repairs and maintenance using tools and service procedures
  • basic computer skills and ability to complete digital work orders
  • ability to safely operate equipment used for diagnostics
  • strong verbal and written communication skills
  • ability to lift 75 lbs. repeatedly

It's a Plus if You Have:
  • experience with John Deere, turf, or lawn & garden equipment
  • basic service technician certification
  • associate degree in a technical field
  • forklift certification
  • experience using Service Advisor or similar software
