Apprentice Program Description:

Seneca's Apprentice Program has been developed for individuals with the drive to become successful members of our professional organization. This is an exciting opportunity to advance a career in Commercial Insurance! You will learn, expand and enhance all aspects of Operations Support Services functions by following Seneca's best practices.

Training will include onboarding within one of Seneca's local offices which is supplemented with virtual classroom training and on-the-job development during the duration of the Apprentice Program. Our on-the-job and virtual training will provide the technical tools needed in Seneca's Operations Support Services organization. You will also learn how to apply your knowledge to ensure you understand how we "deliver when experience matters". You will progressively build your skills as you are introduced to more complex Operations Support Services, case studies, skill-building exercises and on-the-job training that help you understand how to work both internally and with our business partners and customers.

This position will be closely supervised and work within defined Operations Support Services processes, procedures and authorities providing a high level of customer service to our business partners and customers. After an initial period of training, this position will handle increasingly expanding Operations support responsibilities based on your demonstrated abilities and proficiencies. Participants go through a structured 12 to 18 month apprentice program that provides both technical and real-life perspectives to understand commercial insurance Operations services.

Position Description:

An Operations Support Services Apprentice will be required to complete an insurance designation from The Institutes in addition to learning and handling the responsibilities of an Operations Specialist. Duties of an Operations Specialist position, including support to the claims, underwriting and other commercial insurance professionals through the review and setting up of Operations support service requests, triage and routing of all correspondence and calls to the appropriate claims, finance, underwriting professionals. Analysis, preparation of Operations support requests, handling documentation and notate/update claims, policy and premium file documents according to procedure, and provide accurate coverage and statistical information for systems updating.

Training:

  • Phase 1: The employee will spend approximately 6 to 9 months training with hands-on experience handling and processing insurance transactions in Seneca's production claims, financial and underwriting systems and during this phase of the training curriculum the employee will be required to attain the Associate in Risk Management (ARM) designation by passing the exams of following online insurance industry courses through self-study:
    • ARM 400: Risk in an Evolving World
    • ARM 401: Holistically Assessing Risk
    • ARM 402: Successfully Treating Risk
  • Successful completion and passing of these courses will be required to continue onto Phase 2 of this Apprentice Program.
  • Phase 2: Within the first 6 months of Phase 2 of the Apprentice Program - Operations Support Services curriculum, the employee will be expected to fully assume the responsibilities of the Operations Specialist job duties in Claims, Underwriting or Home Office Operations Support Services Units.

Responsibilities:

  • Customer Engagement - Serves as an Operations Specialist by promptly and professionally addressing external and internal customer questions and concerns, which may include: Claims, Underwriting or Home Office support services; triage and route callers and electronic service requests to the appropriate department; Answers claims, underwriting or general support service request and the status and related questions
  • Claims & Underwriting Operational Services - Partners with claims, underwriting and finance professionals in property and casualty claims / underwriting / premium receivables departments to assist with the timely resolution of support matters, which may include: Properly documenting files / service requests, including notes and diaries; Reviews and processes payment requests for proper billing and coding; Assists with claim and/or underwriting document preparation for reporting and reviews.
  • Data and Information Management - Maintains accurate records and information management, such as: Prepares, generates and reviews daily/monthly/quarterly and ad hoc reports using the most effective technology; Updates data discrepancies identified in reports and systems; Uses management information data to prepare line of business or financial reports; Prepares operational reports for claim and underwriting professionals and managers; Accurately documents pending and completed work activities using appropriate systems.
  • Financial Controls and Assessments - Assists with claims and underwriting financial standards, including: Performs underlying controls and effectively communicates findings; Assesses the reasonableness of data as well as identifying discrepancies, including reconciliations; Assesses the effectiveness of financial controls; Prepares data entries in accordance with established standards. Supports statutory reporting requirements.
  • Organize and work with detailed office systems.
  • Review and verify data, such as age, name, address, and policy premium, and other policy specific detail.
  • Other duties as assigned.
