How much do apprentice mineralogy jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 8, 2026, the average hourly pay for apprentice mineralogy in the United States is $22.02, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $17.31 and $24.04 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What can you do with a degree in mineralogy?

A degree in mineralogy prepares individuals for careers in mineral exploration, mining, quality control, and research. Mineralogists analyze mineral properties using tools like microscopes and spectrometers and often work in laboratories, fieldwork, or environmental assessments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Apprentice Mineralogist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Apprentice Mineralogist, you need a solid understanding of geology, mineral identification, and basic laboratory techniques, often supported by coursework or a degree in earth sciences or a related field. Familiarity with microscopes, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and mineral analysis software is commonly required. Attention to detail, strong analytical thinking, and effective communication are standout soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure accurate mineral analysis, successful data interpretation, and effective collaboration within scientific teams.

What is an Apprentice Mineralogy?

An Apprentice Mineralogy is an entry-level position in the field of mineralogy, where individuals learn about minerals, their properties, classifications, and identification techniques. As an apprentice, you typically work under the guidance of experienced mineralogists in laboratories, mining operations, or academic settings. The role involves hands-on training, assisting with sample collection and analysis, and gaining foundational knowledge necessary for a career in mineral sciences.

Is 27 too old for an apprenticeship?

In the field of apprentice mineralogy, age is generally not a barrier; many apprentices start at various ages, including in their late 20s. Success depends on relevant skills, motivation, and willingness to learn, rather than age alone. Employers often value practical knowledge and commitment over age restrictions.

Is there an apprenticeship for excavation?

An Apprentice Mineralogy role typically focuses on studying mineral samples and their properties, not excavation. However, related apprenticeships in excavation or mining often involve on-the-job training, safety certifications, and equipment operation. These programs are usually offered through mining companies or technical schools and may require prior knowledge of geology or earth sciences.

What is the difference between Apprentice Mineralogy vs Mineral Processing Technician?

AspectApprentice MineralogyMineral Processing Technician
CredentialsOn-the-job training, basic education in geology or earth sciencesTechnical diploma or associate degree in mineral processing or related field
Work EnvironmentLaboratory, field sites, mining operationsProcessing plants, mineral extraction facilities
Industry UsageEntry-level role in mineralogy and geology teamsOperational role focused on mineral processing and plant maintenance

Apprentice Mineralogy roles typically involve learning foundational skills in mineral identification and geology, often with on-the-job training. In contrast, Mineral Processing Technicians focus on operating and maintaining processing equipment in mineral extraction facilities. Both roles are essential in the mining industry but differ in training requirements and daily responsibilities.

What is the highest paying apprenticeship trade?

In the field of mineralogy and related trades, apprenticeships in specialized areas such as geoscience technology or mineral processing can offer higher wages, especially when combined with certifications or technical skills. Generally, trades that require advanced technical knowledge or involve hazardous environments tend to pay more during apprenticeships. However, overall highest-paying apprenticeships vary by industry and location.

What are some typical responsibilities an Apprentice Mineralogist can expect during their first year on the job?

As an Apprentice Mineralogist, you can expect to be involved in a mix of laboratory work, field sampling, and data analysis. Early responsibilities often include assisting with mineral sample preparation, performing basic mineral identification tests, and recording observations under the supervision of senior mineralogists. You may also participate in field trips to collect samples and learn proper documentation and safety procedures. Collaborating with geologists, laboratory technicians, and other team members is common, helping you gain practical experience and an understanding of the full mineral analysis workflow.
