This position is responsible for responding to emergency scenes to perform fire suppression, emergency medical, rescue, hazardous materials mitigation, and other emergency services duties. This job is a safety sensitive position that will require a pre-employment drug test and subsequent random drug and alcohol testing in accordance with Barrow County Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace.
In order to qualify for this position, the following certifications MUST BE attached to the application (if certifications are not attached, you will be disqualified from the hiring process until documentation can be provided);
  • NPQ FFII Certification
  • Georgia FF Certification
  • NPQ Hazardous Materials Operations
  • Georgia EMT-I or AEMT or PMDC
  • ICS 100, 200, 700, and 800
  • High School Diploma or GED or Transcripts

Base Salaries:

Base Salaries do not include built in overtime or holiday pay.
Step Scale Adjustments
The department utilizes a step scale to adjust salaries based on years of service. Firefighters receive step increases for time in service, with additional steps available for specific achievements.
Service Transfer Credit:
  • We offer 1 year of service credit for every 1 years at a comparable department.
  • Maximum credit is 10 years (Step 5) upon hire.

MAJOR DUTIES
  • Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls for service.
  • Performs fire suppression and emergency medical response activities.
  • Provides emergency medical care in accordance with Paramedic scope of practice.
  • Maintains a state of readiness in preparation for emergency and non-emergency response; inspects, tests and maintains inventory of medical and fire supplies and equipment.
  • Provides public education and information related to fire and life safety.
  • Locates water supplies, lays out and maneuvers fire hoses, and directs streams of water and/or chemicals onto fire.
  • Performs and coordinate fire plans.
  • Completes patient care reports, fire reports, maintenance reports, and training reports.
  • Participates in company training in accordance with assigned classes.
  • Maintains a detailed knowledge of assigned territory; maintains knowledge of county Fire and EMS districts.
  • Operates a variety of equipment, including chainsaws, extrication tools, firefighting tools, hand tools, self-contained breathing apparatus, medical equipment and ladders.
  • Performs general housekeeping, grounds maintenance and building maintenance at assigned fire stations.
  • Cleans and services assigned equipment; reports maintenance needs to supervisor.
  • Performs general office and clerical work; prepares reports and other documents.
  • Maintains accountability for all pre-hospital medications.
  • Performs related duties.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
  • Knowledge of department operational policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of current and accepted firefighting practices.
  • Knowledge of Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Council compliance standards.
  • Knowledge of emergency medical response procedures.
  • Knowledge of pharmacology of all pre-hospital medications utilized.
  • Knowledge of departmental and county policies and procedures and related federal, state, and local guidelines.
  • Knowledge of county streets and geography.
  • Knowledge of computers and job related software programs.
  • Skill in operating emergency vehicles and equipment.
  • Skill in the analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions.
  • Skill in the preparation of clear and precise administrative reports.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the National Fire Protection Association and the Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Act.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain appropriate state EMS certification
