We are seeking a practitioner-oriented Ph.D. in finance to teach an exciting undergraduate course built around real investment data, hands-on Excel analysis, and live market applications. Students will work with Bloomberg and FactSet on projects spanning crypto returns, housing valuation, FX carry trades, momentum strategies, ETF replication, and portfolio construction. This is a chance to bring real-world investing into the classroom and help students turn financial theory into practical investment and risk-management decisions.

The course description is as follows:

This course focuses on applying theoretical concepts in investing with real investment data using primarily Excel. Students will get hands-on experience with real financial data, learn to use Excel for investing problems, and gain valuable knowledge of applied investing. The course centers around the Benjamin Franklin quote, "Tell me and I forget, teach me and I remember, and involve me and I learn." The class will be driven by many small projects involving using Bloomberg and FactSet to acquire real financial data and then apply it to solve problems, develop insights, and distill learnings to develop investment and risk management decisions. The course will also involve presenting results in class in simulated professional settings. Projects will include explaining crypto asset returns, building models that assess how expensive is the us housing market and housing markets in various cities, expressing direct versus synthetic carry trades in the foreign exchange markets, building an efficient frontier with a collection of actual asset classes, testing and developing momentum-trading strategies, and ETF Replication with Derivatives and analysis of ETFs and their managements strategies.

Qualifications

  • A Master's degree in a related management/business discipline, or Bachelor's + equivalent professional experience;

  • Actual empirical experience in analyzing trading strategies and performance using research-driven backtesting preferred;

  • People who have worked as quant analysts or researchers for investment firms preferred;

  • Critical understanding of the relationship between professional/discipline expertise, social justice, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs);

  • Relevant teaching experience or demonstrable ability to teach at the undergraduate and/or graduate level;

  • Knowledge of principles and methods for instruction of individuals and groups, and the assessment of learning;

  • Planning and organizing skills sufficient to ensure implementation of the assigned curriculum, job duties, and established expectations;

  • Oral and written communication skills in the English language at a level that conveys information to and from students, colleagues, and others in an effective manner;

  • Awareness of contemporary and critical concerns in the discipline, and Interpersonal orientation that encourages productive interactions with students and colleagues.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Plan and organize instruction according to approved course outlines and student learning outcomes to maximize student learning in alignment with department, school, and university mission/goals; implement the student performance objectives as listed on the official course outline of record.

  • Prepare course materials such as syllabi, visual and audio recordings, readings and assignments, assessments, and other learning resources.

  • Prepare and deliver/lead effective lectures, case analyses, simulations, and other engaging learning activities.

  • Initiate, moderate, and facilitate inclusive classroom discussions.

  • Observe and evaluate student performance in meeting course objectives and student learning outcomes through assignments, projects, discussions, and/or examinations; provide feedback in a timely manner to student inquiries in class, online, or during established consultation office hours.

  • Maintain current, accurate records of course enrollment, attendance, student academic progress, course curriculum, and student learning outcomes; prepare and submit data and reports related to course and student progress in a timely manner.

  • Evaluate and select instructional materials such as textbooks, manuals, software, and tools in collaboration, as appropriate, with discipline full-time faculty; order instructional materials according to campus bookstore procedure to ensure timely delivery.

  • Maintain student grades and other required records or reporting materials.

  • Stay current on developments in the discipline by reading professional literature, talking with colleagues, and participating in professional workshops or conferences;

  • Stay current on effective teaching methods via resources and training offered by USF's Center for Teaching Excellence.

  • Hold weekly office hours (at least 1 hour for each course section taught) for the purpose of advising and assisting students.

  • Advise and instruct students regarding lifelong learning resources and effective study skills; refer students to support services, programs, resources, and other professionals as appropriate.
