What does an application support do?

Application support employees manage the usability of a program for their employer and clients. There are various roles that provide service for a particular software, and the specific job duties vary. For example, application support analysts or specialists are often the first points of contact for clients having issues with the program. They determine the problem the customer has and attempts to fix it. This is similar to a customer service role, but application support jobs often involve technical skills and database management. If they are unable to fix the problem, they transfer the client to application support leads or another supervisor to handle. Engineers or developers in this field help clients adjust the software to better meet their needs or resolve current problems they are facing when using the program.

What are application support roles?

Application Support roles involve assisting users and organizations in resolving issues related to software applications. This typically includes troubleshooting technical problems, providing guidance on software usage, performing routine maintenance, and escalating more complex issues to development teams. Application Support professionals ensure that applications run smoothly and meet business needs. They often act as a bridge between end-users and IT departments, ensuring rapid problem resolution and minimizing downtime.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an application support specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Application Support Specialist, you need strong problem-solving skills, a solid understanding of software applications, and often a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with ticketing systems, SQL databases, and commonly used IT service management tools like ServiceNow is typically required. Excellent communication, patience, and the ability to work under pressure help you effectively address user concerns and collaborate with technical teams. These skills ensure timely resolution of issues, minimize downtime, and maintain high levels of user satisfaction.

How does an application support professional typically collaborate with development and IT teams to resolve complex issues?

Application Support professionals act as a crucial link between end-users, development, and IT infrastructure teams. When complex issues arise, they gather detailed information from users, replicate problems, and escalate unresolved technical issues to developers while providing clear documentation. They also coordinate with IT teams to ensure that system dependencies, configurations, or server-related matters are addressed. Regular communication and participation in cross-functional meetings help ensure that issues are resolved efficiently and that system improvements are implemented based on user feedback.

Relocation: Available for qualified candidates

KORE1, a nationwide provider of staffing and recruiting solutions, has an immediate opening for an Enterprise MES Lead | ETO Manufacturing | Apriso, Siemens Opcenter, Plex, SAP DM/ME, FactoryTalk, iBaseT or Wonderware
The Enterprise MES (Manufacturing Execution System) IT Lead is responsible for leading the implementation, integration, optimization, and long-term support of the organization's Manufacturing Execution System. This role oversees the interface of MES with SAP and other enterprise systems, ensuring seamless integration across manufacturing operations while supporting future expansion of the platform across multiple manufacturing facilities.
You will play a pivotal role in defining technical strategy, guiding solution design, partnering with implementation vendors, and ensuring successful delivery of enterprise MES capabilities that support business objectives. Following implementation, this individual will serve as the enterprise IT lead for the MES platform, driving continuous improvement, system enhancements, and future deployments.
This is a highly visible techno-functional leadership role requiring close collaboration with manufacturing, operations, business stakeholders, application support teams, and external implementation partners. Success in this position requires balancing technical expertise with strong communication and relationship-building skills to help drive digital transformation across the shop floor while ensuring systems support operational efficiency, quality, compliance, and integration with enterprise applications such as SAP.
Key Job Responsibilities

To be successful in this role, the Enterprise MES IT Lead must possess a strong understanding of manufacturing business processes and enterprise application technologies while effectively partnering with business leaders, manufacturing stakeholders, vendors, and executive leadership.

  • Lead and oversee the implementation, integration, upgrades, support, and continuous optimization of the enterprise Manufacturing Execution System (MES).
  • Serve as the primary IT owner and subject matter expert for the organization's MES platform.
  • Partner with manufacturing, operations, engineering, and business stakeholders to understand operational needs and translate them into scalable MES solutions.
  • Collaborate with implementation partners, application support providers, and internal IT teams to successfully deliver MES initiatives across multiple manufacturing facilities.
  • Define technical requirements, functional specifications, and solution architecture aligned with business objectives and manufacturing processes.
  • Evaluate business requirements and recommend scalable configuration and integration approaches while minimizing unnecessary customizations.
  • Employ application and integration best practices, enterprise architecture standards, environment management, testing, and change management throughout the solution lifecycle.
  • Ensure MES solutions are successfully implemented across manufacturing plants while supporting integration with SAP and other enterprise and shop floor systems.
  • Partner with Application Managed Services (AMS) teams to coordinate ongoing support, issue resolution, upgrades, and release activities. This role provides technical leadership but is not responsible for day-to-day help desk or application administration.
  • Ensure the long-term sustainability, security, performance, and scalability of MES technologies while aligning platform capabilities with business objectives and future roadmaps.
  • Identify, investigate, and recommend improvements to manufacturing applications, business processes, integrations, and system capabilities.
  • Lead cross-functional initiatives involving manufacturing stakeholders, implementation partners, offshore support teams, and future internal MES resources through influence rather than direct authority.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives that increase manufacturing efficiency, product quality, traceability, compliance, and operational visibility.
  • Stay current with MES technologies, manufacturing best practices, and digital manufacturing trends to identify future enhancement opportunities.
  • Serve as the primary IT point of contact for all enterprise MES-related initiatives and future platform expansion.

Qualifications/Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, Manufacturing Systems, or a related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • Experience within engineer-to-order, heavy industrial, mining, construction equipment, automotive, or other complex manufacturing environments is required (if you don't have DELMIA Apriso)
  • 7-10+ years of experience supporting Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), including implementation, integration, and ongoing support, with 4+ years of experience providing technical leadership for enterprise manufacturing applications.
  • Hands-on experience with an enterprise Manufacturing Execution System (MES).
    • Experience with DELMIA Apriso is highly preferred; experience with comparable enterprise MES platforms such as Siemens Opcenter, Plex, SAP Digital Manufacturing (DM), SAP ME, IbaseT, or similar enterprise MES solutions will also be considered.
  • Experience integrating MES with SAP or other enterprise ERP systems.
  • Techno-functional background with the ability to understand system configuration, integrations, and solution design while partnering with implementation teams and vendors. Hands-on software development is not required.
  • Experience supporting enterprise manufacturing environments and partnering with plant operations, engineering, and business stakeholders.
  • Experience leading cross-functional initiatives involving internal teams, implementation partners, vendors, and distributed support organizations.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify opportunities for system optimization and continuous improvement.
  • Experience with project planning, implementation, testing, deployment, and ongoing application support.
  • Familiarity with Manufacturing Operations Management (MOM), PLC/SCADA integration, machine connectivity, serialization, lot traceability, WIP management, routing, dispatching, remanufacturing workflows, or Industry 4.0 initiatives is a plus.
  • Experience working with global implementation partners or offshore application support teams is preferred.
  • Excellent written, verbal, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to influence both technical and business stakeholders.
  • Ability to travel approximately 20-30% to manufacturing facilities.
  • Ability to work onsite four days per week in Milwaukee, WI or Chicago, IL

Compensation depends on experience but is typically $140K - 170K plus 10% bonus. The actual offer will consider a wide range of factors, including experience and location.
