Will AI replace coders by 2040?

Application Software Engineers develop, test, and maintain software applications, and while AI can automate certain coding tasks, it is unlikely to fully replace human coders by 2040. AI tools are expected to augment programming work, requiring engineers to adapt by learning new skills and working alongside automation technologies.

What do application software engineers do?

Application software engineers design, develop, test, and maintain software applications used on computers, mobile devices, or web platforms. They work with programming languages, development tools, and collaborate with teams to create functional and efficient software solutions tailored to user needs.

What engineers make $500,000?

Senior application software engineers with extensive experience, specialized skills in areas like machine learning or cloud computing, and often working at large tech companies or in high-demand industries can earn $500,000 or more annually. Compensation may include base salary, bonuses, and stock options, especially at executive or highly senior levels.

What are the typical challenges faced by Application Software Engineers on the job?

Application Software Engineers often need to balance multiple priorities, including tight project deadlines, changing client requirements, and debugging complex software issues. They may face challenges integrating new features with existing systems, ensuring rigorous testing, and maintaining high code quality in collaborative team settings. Staying updated with the latest technologies and adapting to evolving industry standards is also an ongoing aspect of the role. Overcoming these challenges requires continuous learning, careful planning, and effective communication with cross-functional teams, making the role both demanding and highly rewarding for tech professionals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Application Software Engineer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Application Software Engineer, you need a solid grasp of programming languages such as Java, C#, or Python, as well as a relevant computer science degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and frameworks such as .NET or Spring is highly valued, and certifications in software development can be advantageous. Strong problem-solving skills, effective teamwork, and clear communication help candidates succeed in dynamic, cross-functional environments. These skills are critical to developing reliable applications, collaborating efficiently, and adapting to the evolving technology landscape.

Can I make 200k a year as a software engineer?

Application Software Engineers can earn $200,000 or more annually, especially with experience, working in high-demand industries, or in senior roles. Achieving this salary often requires advanced skills, specialized knowledge, and sometimes working in regions with higher compensation levels or at large tech companies.

Job description

Job Summary:
SpaceX is a pioneering aerospace company focused on making space exploration a reality. They are seeking an Application Software Engineer for their inference team to develop and optimize high-performance AI inference systems that support mission-critical applications at SpaceX.
Responsibilities:
• Develop highly reliable, high-throughput inference systems that serve the best AI models internally across SpaceX
• Architect and implement scalable distributed infrastructure for model serving, including load balancing, auto-scaling, batch scheduling, global KV cache, and continuous batching
• Optimize latency and throughput of model inference under real production workloads, including low-level GPU kernel work, quantization, speculative decoding, and other acceleration techniques
• Build reliable, high-concurrency serving systems with 100% uptime, low tail latency, and excellent observability
• Own end-to-end components such as request routing, SDK development, rate limiting, and efficient scaling for internal SpaceX AI inference platforms
• Benchmark, fine-tune, and accelerate inference engines (e.g., SGLang, vLLM, TensorRT-LLM)
• Develop custom tools for tracing, replaying, and resolving issues across the full stack — from orchestration down to GPU kernels
• Create robust CI/CD infrastructure for seamless endpoint deployment, image publishing, and inference engine updates
• Collaborate across SpaceXAI teams to integrate inference capabilities into broader systems and workflows
Qualifications:
Required:
• Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, math, or scientific discipline; OR 2+ years of professional experience building software in lieu of a degree
• Experience in designing, implementing, and maintaining reliable and horizontally scalable distributed systems
• 1+ years of experience in full stack development or backend development with production systems
• 1+ years of experience with Rust or C++
• You may be asked to work extended hours/weekends dependent on launch cadence and platform demands
• This role requires you to be onsite in Palo Alto. Remote and/or hybrid work will not be considered
Preferred:
• Experience with LLM inference engines and serving frameworks (e.g., SGLang, vLLM, Triton, TensorRT-LLM)
• Deep low-level systems programming and optimizations: GPU kernels, code generation, batching, caching, parallelism, quantization, and speculative decoding
• Experience with large-scale, high-concurrency production serving systems
• Knowledge of service observability and reliability best practices
• Experience operating commonly used databases such as PostgreSQL, ClickHouse, or MongoDB
• Experience designing or building with agent SDKs and agent orchestration frameworks
• Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and containerized applications
• Expert knowledge of gRPC (unary, response streaming, bi-directional streaming, REST mapping)
• Programming experience in Python, Go, or similar languages
• Experience with version control, continuous integration, continuous delivery, build systems, and monitoring
• Expertise in profiling and improving application performance
Company:
SpaceX develops and operates rockets, satellite networks, and AI infrastructure including launch, connectivity, and cloud services. Founded in 2002, the company is headquartered in Hawthorne, USA, with a team of 1001-5000 employees. The company is currently Late Stage.
