Application Decommissioning information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in application decommissioning, and why are they important?

To excel in Application Decommissioning, you need a strong understanding of IT systems, data migration, and lifecycle management, often supported by a background in information technology or computer science. Familiarity with tools like data archiving solutions, application inventory platforms, and knowledge of compliance frameworks is typically required. Strong project management, analytical thinking, and communication skills help professionals coordinate stakeholders and manage complex decommissioning processes. These competencies are crucial to ensure secure, compliant, and efficient retirement of legacy systems without disrupting business operations.

What are some common challenges faced during the application decommissioning process, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals involved in application decommissioning often encounter challenges such as data migration, ensuring regulatory compliance, and minimizing business disruption. Data migration requires careful planning to securely transfer or archive information without loss or corruption. Addressing compliance involves verifying that data retention and destruction policies are followed, while minimizing business disruption requires clear communication with stakeholders and thorough testing before decommissioning. Leveraging project management frameworks and collaborating closely with IT, legal, and business units can help overcome these challenges and ensure a smooth decommissioning process.

    About Alvarez & Marsal

Alvarez & Marsal (A&M) is a global consulting firm with over 10,000 entrepreneurial, action and results-oriented professionals in over 40 countries. We take a hands-on approach to solving our clients' problems and assisting them in reaching their potential. The collaborative environment and engaging work—guided by A&M's core values of Integrity, Quality, Objectivity, Fun, Personal Reward, and Inclusive Diversity—are why our people love working at A&M.

    The Team

Alvarez & Marsal's Corporate Performance Improvement practice is looking for a Cloud & Hybrid Infrastructure leader who bridges cloud strategy and hands-on execution for clients operating complex multi-cloud and hybrid environments. This role requires someone who has optimized large commercial cloud footprints and designed cloud operating models - not just migrated workloads.

    Experience Should Include

    • Enterprise cloud architecture (AWS, Azure, GCP) with hybrid cloud design patterns across classification levels

    • Assessing Workload classification, migration sequencing, and cloud-native refactoring (6Rs framework or equivalent)

    • Designing for high elasticity, Horizontal and Vertical scaling as well as Dynamic Provisioning.

    • Assessing Cloud operating model design - platform teams, product teams, customer support, vendor management

    • Multi-tenancy design and enterprise cloud governance experience

    • In depth knowledge of Commercial cloud cost models, licensing, and commitment-based pricing strategies (reserved instances, savings plans, committed-use agreements)

    • DevSecOps, Infrastructure-as-Code, and CI/CD pipeline design fluency

    • Federal cloud environments preferred - experience with FedRAMP, IL certifications, and multi-classification cloud architectures is a strong advantage

    • AI/ML workload placement strategy and cloud-native AI services - must demonstrate active use of AI tools in delivery; AI fluency is required for this role

    • General understanding of cloud cost management and fin-ops.

      How you will contribute

      • Serve as senior technical advisor on cloud strategy and hybrid infrastructure engagements

      • Lead workload rationalization assessments - classifying workloads for rehosting, replatforming, refactoring, or retirement

      • Design hybrid/multi-cloud target architectures across classification levels and operating environments

      • Develop cloud migration roadmaps with decommission gating to ensure on-premises capacity retires as workloads migrate

      • Advise on cloud vendor strategy, including multi-vendor approaches, lock-in mitigation, and contract terms optimization

      • Support practice development through internal training, content creation, and people development

      Qualifications

      • 8-12+ years of professional experience in cloud infrastructure leadership, with consulting or advisory delivery

      • Demonstrated experience leading enterprise migration programs (500+ workloads)

      • Deep understanding of security requirements in regulated environments (FedRAMP, IL certifications, HIPAA, SOC2)

      • Federal cloud experience preferred - deep transformation experience in regulated industries can substitute

      • Bachelor's degree required; cloud certifications (AWS Solutions Architect Professional, Azure Solutions Architect Expert, GCP Professional Cloud Architect) strongly preferred

      • Comfortable with travel up to 80%

      • Full-time, contract, and project-based engagements available

      What Distinguishes a Great Candidate

Has optimized large commercial cloud footprints - not just built them. Understands COTS application rationalization. Can design cloud operating models, not just cloud architectures. Brings AI-assisted architecture decision-making and workload placement analysis as standard practice.
