We are seeking a customer-focused Human Resources professional who enjoys recruiting top talent, supporting hiring managers, and creating an outstanding onboarding experience for new employees.
What We're Looking For
Ferrum College is seeking an organized and service-oriented Human Resources Specialist to support the College's recruitment, hiring, and onboarding efforts while providing exceptional customer service to applicants, employees, supervisors, and campus visitors.
This position serves as the primary coordinator for recruitment activities, applicant tracking, employment processes, and onboarding while supervising the Human Resources student employees. The successful candidate will be highly organized, detail-oriented, and committed to delivering a positive candidate and employee experience.
Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate the full recruitment process, including posting vacancies, managing the applicant tracking system, and supporting hiring managers throughout the hiring process.
  • Create, monitor, and post approved job vacancies on the College's career site, applicant tracking system, and external recruitment platforms.
  • Review employment applications for completeness and route qualified candidates to hiring managers.
  • Manage applicant information and maintain accurate recruitment records within the applicant tracking system.
  • Coordinate position approvals and recruitment processes in accordance with college policies and procedures.
  • Serve as the primary Human Resources contact for applicants throughout the recruitment process.
  • Coordinate pre-employment activities, including background checks, employment documentation, and onboarding.
  • Assist with new hire orientation and onboarding activities.
  • Supervise, train, and schedule Human Resources student employees while ensuring exceptional customer service to campus visitors and applicants.
  • Maintain confidential personnel files and Human Resources records in accordance with college policies and record retention requirements.
  • Process employment verifications and reference check requests.
  • Track departmental purchase orders, process invoices, and order office and student employment supplies.
  • Assist with Human Resources communications, forms, surveys, procedures, and departmental initiatives.
  • Support departmental technology improvements, records management, and special projects.
  • Provide backup support for other Human Resources functions as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with applicant tracking systems (ATS) and Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS).
  • Experience in recruitment, onboarding, or talent acquisition.
  • Experience supervising student employees or administrative support staff.
  • Experience working in higher education.
  • SHRM-CP, PHR, or other Human Resources certification preferred.
