What is apparel sourcing?

Apparel sourcing refers to the process of finding and procuring clothing and textile products from manufacturers or suppliers. This role involves identifying reliable vendors, negotiating prices and terms, ensuring quality standards, and managing timelines for production and delivery. Apparel sourcing professionals often work closely with designers, production teams, and logistics to bring fashion products from concept to market efficiently. The goal is to balance cost, quality, and speed while adhering to ethical and sustainability standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in apparel sourcing?

To excel in Apparel Sourcing, you need a strong understanding of supply chain management, textile production, and global sourcing strategies, often supported by a degree in fashion, business, or supply chain management. Familiarity with sourcing platforms, ERP systems, and certifications like CPSM (Certified Professional in Supply Management) is valuable. Strong negotiation, communication, and relationship-building skills set top professionals apart in this field. These abilities ensure cost-effective procurement, quality compliance, and timely delivery in a competitive global market.

What are some common challenges faced in an apparel sourcing role and how can they be effectively managed?

Professionals in Apparel Sourcing frequently encounter challenges such as managing supplier relationships across different countries, ensuring product quality, and meeting tight production timelines. Navigating varying regulations, language barriers, and time zones can add complexity to daily operations. To effectively manage these challenges, strong communication skills, proactive planning, and the use of digital sourcing platforms are essential. Building strong, transparent relationships with suppliers and staying updated on global sourcing trends also help mitigate risks and ensure smooth workflow.

Job Overview
The Senior, Sourcing Strategy plays a critical role in shaping and executing the long-term sourcing strategy for Macy's Private Brands Apparel. As part of the Strategic Sourcing organization, this leader partners closely with Private Brand leadership, Merchandising, Product Development, and cross-functional stakeholders to identify and implement sourcing initiatives that drive profitable growth, speed to market, product quality, and competitive advantage.
Leveraging deep expertise across apparel categories including knits, sweaters, wovens, denim, bottoms, dresses, and outerwear, this role develops category-specific sourcing strategies, evaluates global sourcing opportunities, and provides thought leadership on market dynamics, vendor capabilities, and evolving industry trends. The position is responsible for translating business objectives into multi-year sourcing strategies that optimize vendor portfolios, regional allocation, and sourcing diversification while supporting brand growth and product differentiation.
What You Will Do
  • Partner with the Director of Sourcing Strategy to develop and execute multi-year sourcing strategies for Macy's Private Brands apparel categories, aligning sourcing decisions with brand, customer, and financial objectives.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert across apparel categories, providing strategic insights on sourcing capabilities, manufacturing trends, innovation, product complexity, and category-specific opportunities within knits, sweaters, wovens, denim, and adjacent classifications.
  • Lead comprehensive analyses of global markets, vendor capabilities, geopolitical risks, capacity shifts, and competitive dynamics to identify opportunities that enhance margin, quality, speed, and supply chain resilience.
  • Develop strategic recommendations regarding country sourcing mix, vendor portfolio optimization, supplier segmentation, and regional investment strategies to support sustainable growth.
  • Collaborate with Merchandising, Product Development, Costing, Production, and Private Brand leadership teams to align sourcing strategies with seasonal product and business priorities.
  • Evaluate category growth opportunities and sourcing scenarios by assessing demand patterns, product complexity, innovation needs, and supply market capabilities.
  • Drive the development and maintenance of key strategic planning tools, including 3-5 Year Sourcing Plans, Annual Sourcing Strategies, vendor portfolio assessments, and category sourcing roadmaps.
  • Present strategic insights, recommendations, and executive-level business cases to senior leadership to support critical sourcing and investment decisions.
  • Monitor industry, consumer, and manufacturing trends to identify emerging sourcing opportunities, new capabilities, and competitive advantages for Macy's Private Brands.
  • Partner with sourcing, costing, and business stakeholders to proactively identify risks, develop mitigation strategies, and advance initiatives that improve profitability, operational efficiency, and long-term supplier partnerships.

Skills You Will Need
  • Deep knowledge of global apparel sourcing and manufacturing with expertise across categories including knits, sweaters, wovens, denim, bottoms, dresses, and outerwear.
  • Strong understanding of vendor capabilities, regional sourcing advantages, textile and product development processes, and apparel supply chain dynamics.
  • Strategic mindset with the ability to translate complex market intelligence and data into actionable sourcing strategies.
  • Proven ability to influence cross-functional teams and senior leadership through data-driven recommendations and category expertise.
  • Experience developing sourcing strategies, vendor portfolios, and long-range business plans within a retail, wholesale, or private brand environment.

Who You Are
  • Candidates with a bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience in a related field are encouraged to apply.
  • This role involves performing essential job functions such as communication, collaboration, and use of office and computer systems. Responsibilities include the ability to access and review written and electronic information, and to move within the work environment and interact with workplace materials as needed to carry out job responsibilities.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule based on department and company needs.
