Job Description:
Get a jump start on your engineering career as an Engineering Intern in our Roadway Design Division! We offer mentorship, on-the-job training, and career development in a supportive and innovative work environment.
At the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT), we are responsible for the planning, development, design, construction, maintenance and administration of the state highway system. Our goals include preserving the billions of dollars Nebraskans have invested in their state highway system, making the highways safe and efficient, and accomplishing this in a timely and cost-effective manner.
As a Roadway Design Engineering Intern, you will be part of a team that will:
  • Assist in the design of roadway construction projects.
  • Be responsible for assisting in the review of work of a broad scope, complexity, and diversity.
  • Design horizontal alignment, vertical alignment, roadway cross sections and other design features.
  • Prepare preliminary and final construction project plans.
  • Participate in and document engineering decisions, write special provisions and keep project correspondence files accurate and up to date.
  • Prepare for and participate in project meetings including plan in hand, public information, public hearing, pre-appraisal and pre-construction meetings.
  • Prepare for and participate in project field inspections.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements / Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications: Must be a three-fourths time student in good standing majoring in a discipline or field related to the work to be assigned.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • A second semester sophomore majoring in engineering.
  • Experience in the use of Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD).

Other:
  • Must be able to work at least 10 hours a week when classes are in session, 15 hours a week preferred.
  • Temporary full-time employment may be available during scheduled school breaks.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Knowledge of Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD).
