What is an AOG technician?

AOG Technicians, or Aircraft on Ground Technicians, are specialized aviation maintenance professionals who respond to urgent aircraft repairs when an aircraft is grounded due to mechanical or technical issues. Their primary goal is to quickly diagnose and fix problems so the aircraft can safely return to service with minimal delay. AOG Technicians often work on-call, traveling to different locations as needed, and must have strong problem-solving skills and extensive knowledge of aircraft systems. Their work is crucial in minimizing operational disruptions and ensuring flight safety.

What does an AOG technician do?

AOG (Aircraft on Ground) Technicians are responsible for responding rapidly to unscheduled maintenance issues that prevent an aircraft from flying. Unlike standard maintenance roles that often follow a set schedule, AOG Technicians must be prepared to travel at short notice, diagnose complex problems on-site, and implement immediate repairs to minimize downtime. Their work environment is fast-paced and can involve working odd hours, often collaborating closely with flight crews, maintenance planners, and parts suppliers to ensure aircraft are returned to service quickly and safely. This dynamic role requires a high degree of technical expertise, adaptability, and strong communication skills.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be an AOG technician?

To excel as an AOG (Aircraft on Ground) Technician, you need strong aircraft maintenance expertise, troubleshooting skills, and typically an FAA Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) certification or equivalent. Familiarity with diagnostic tools, aircraft maintenance tracking systems, and manufacturer technical documentation is essential. Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help AOG Technicians work efficiently under pressure and coordinate with teams. These skills are vital for minimizing aircraft downtime, ensuring safety, and maintaining operational reliability in time-critical situations.

What is the difference between Aog Technician vs Satellite Communications Technician?

Both Aog Technicians and Satellite Communications Technicians require similar certifications and often work in remote or mobile environments. However, Aog Technicians focus on aircraft communication systems, while Satellite Communications Technicians specialize in satellite systems and ground stations. Their roles are distinct but share overlapping skills in communication technology and technical troubleshooting.

Job description

Equinoxx Aviation – AOG Mechanic Job Posting

Position: AOG Technician – Full-Time, On-Call / Mobile Response

Reports to: AOG Operations Lead / Director of Maintenance

Department: AOG & Mobile Repair Services

At Equinoxx Aviation, we’re a repair station founded by operators who understand that when an aircraft is down, every minute counts. We specialize in jet and turboprop maintenance, avionics sales and integration, and rapid AOG response across the Southeast and beyond. Our AOG team is the front line that keeps customers flying safely and on schedule.

We’re expanding our mobile AOG capability and looking for a skilled, self-reliant A&P Technician who thrives in the field. If you’re the kind of mechanic who can troubleshoot a Learjet at 2 a.m. on a remote ramp, document the work correctly the first time, and still treat the customer like family, we want to talk to you.

Why Join Equinoxx Aviation?

  • Competitive base pay plus overtime, night differential, travel per-diem, and performance bonuses tied directly to AOG response times and customer satisfaction.
  • Full benefits package health, dental, vision, 401(k) with company match, paid time off.
  • Career growth – we promote from within and offer factory training and IA support for the right people.
  • Real ownership culture – as a founder-led shop, your input on processes, tooling, and efficiency improvements is welcomed and rewarded.
  • The satisfaction of knowing you’re part of a tight-knit team that actually keeps aircraft flying when others can’t.

What You’ll Do (Core Responsibilities)

  • Provide immediate 24/7 AOG response – travel on short notice (drive, commercial, or charter) to customer aircraft locations across the U.S.
  • Perform on-site troubleshooting, diagnostics, repairs, inspections, and functional tests on jet and turboprop aircraft (Citation, Challenger, Pilatus, King Air, etc.).
  • Coordinate parts sourcing and logistics
  • Work independently with minimal supervision while staying in communication
  • Represent Equinoxx Aviation professionally – you are the company when you roll up to an AOG call.
  • Prioritize safety over all else

Schedule: Rotating week on week off. Thursday to Wednesday. Guaranteed 40 hours. Significant overtime and travel per-diem opportunities.

What We’re Looking For (Minimum Qualifications)

  • Current FAA Airframe & Powerplant (A&P) Certificate – required.
  • 4+ years of hands-on maintenance experience on turboprop or light/medium jet aircraft (Part 145 or Part 91/135 is a plus).
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot complex systems quickly and safely in the field.
  • Own comprehensive set of hand tools (company supplies specialty tools and ground support equipment).
  • Valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and passport (or ability to obtain one) for occasional international travel.
  • Strong working knowledge of FAA regulations, aircraft maintenance manuals, and service bulletins.
  • Excellent communication skills – you’ll be updating pilots, directors of maintenance, and owners directly.
  • Physical ability to work in all weather conditions, climb ladders, and lift 50+ lbs regularly.
  • Must be able to pass pre-employment drug screening and background check.

Preferred but not required:

  • Factory or type-specific training on Garmin avionics, Pratt & Whitney, or common business-jet platforms.
  • Previous Part 145 repair station or mobile AOG experience.
  • Sheet-metal fabrication or composite repair skills.
  • Handle avionics diagnostics and basic Garmin installations/repairs – our avionics shop support is just a phone call away.

We run a clean, professional operation that values safety, speed, and integrity above everything else.
